The Students Commission of Canada

The Students Commission of Canada At our core is the : Respect, Listen, Understand and Communicate™.

Founded in 1991, we're a national charity that purposely works with others to ensure young people's voices are heard and valued. . The Students Commission grew out of a national magazine, founded by youth for youth in 1940. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Teen Generation or TG, was written by youth for youth and distributed in all high schools in Canada, sup

ported by professional adult allies. This partnership between youth and adults, with its core process of addressing issues through engagement of youth and effective communication, expanded in 1991 into The Students Commission.

Weekly Pulse round 7️⃣
📺 Flo went on CTV News to talk numbers. StatCan’s June report shows youth added 33,000 jobs, with unemployment ticking slightly down from May. Good news doesn’t come around often, so we’re taking the win.
💜 Jocelyn went back East to join the 18th annual North Preston day and celebrate 18 years of proud Black heritage, cultural resilience, and community unity in one of Canada’s oldest and largest Black communities, rooted in African, African American, Jamaican Maroon, and Mi’kmaw ancestry, home on Mi’kmaw land. More than a parade. It’s living history. You can read more at blacknovascotia.ca
📞 We all need a little hopecore right now. For SCC, HUM is hope - proof of what happens when you choose dialogue over debate, connection over conflict. If you have a story or quote you want to submit, dm us!

Kemptville, Ontario. August 11–16, 1998. 150 youth from across canada, ages 13 to 19, bilingual, from every background raised $750 each just to get there.
They came out of that week with 21 community action projects, a list of national recommendations, and a report they handed directly to the Canadian government.
One delegate wrote: “all we needed was for somebody to listen - and as it turned out, many people were actually willing.”
This was one of the Sharing Resources 2000 conferences, organized by The Students Commission and TG Magazine. And yeah - somebody listened. 📋✊

————— Kemptville, Ontario.

Tiny Giant Magazine wasn’t just a publication — it was the beginning of the SCC story 📖
Before the Students Commission of Canada had a name, it had a magazine. Written entirely by young people, for young people, about the issues, ideas, and experiences that mattered most to them. No filters. No adults editing out the good parts. Just youth voices in print. 📝
It’s a big part of our origin story, and we’re making sure it doesn’t stay buried in the archives.
REPRINT: From the Tiny Giant Archives is our weekly throwback series, bringing these stories, perspectives, and moments back to life, one issue at a time.
35 years later, the mission hasn’t changed, just the platform has.
StudentsCommission

New leadership at the Students Commission of Canada (SCC)

On behalf of the SCC Board of Directors, we are extremely proud of SCC’s distributed leadership and succession planning model. We believe no one does it better than SCC, with a strong and sustained investment in our people and their professional development.

The Board has received notice of resignation from Sharif Mahdy, Chief Executive Officer. Sharif led the expansion and formalization of distributed leadership across SCC and intentionally prepared the organization for this transition. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and contributions and wish him well as he pursues the next chapter of his career. Sharif will support the final steps of succession until his last formal day with SCC on June 12, 2026.

With great joy, the Board announces that Florence Bergeron and Christa Romaldi will step forward into co-leadership of SCC as part of its next 10‑year strategy. Florence has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Christa Chief Development Officer (CDO). SCC’s Board is fully supportive of this co‑leadership team and all SCC leaders and staff.

As Board, we unanimously endorse our new leadership team and thank Sharif for his remarkable tenure and the growth and sustainability he advanced at SCC over the past eight years. This growth reflects the talent, passion, and dedication of SCC staff and their unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for young people.

On behalf of the Board of Directors
