🎋 On Thursday, August 20th we held our annual Momiji Summer Festival!

Staff, volunteers, and performers worked hard to make this summer festival a day full of fun for tenants and community members!

The day started with street food for sale in the main hall, along with some fun festival games! There was freshly prepared yakisoba, sōmen, spam musubi, and grilled corn (Scarborough grown from Sweet Ridge Farms!).

Then everyone sat down in our Auditorium for a delicious bento prepared by Maru Sun restaurant, and some amazing performances by our skilled community members! Thank you to our odori dancers, Aja, Joyce, Michie, Eizo, Emma, Claire, and Rosie, our singers Atsuko and Noboru, and musician Aiko. We also hosted a special guest from Japan, Mieno Fumio, who put on a live calligraphy performance.

The event wrapped up with some watermelon smashing (no watermelon was wasted!), followed by odori that everyone could participate in!

Please join us at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) or Momiji Health Care Society (Momiji) on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 3:30pm EST for the live streaming of the opening ceremony of the Japanese Canadian Monument that is taking place in Victoria, British Columbia.

The Japanese Canadian Monument lists the names of all Japanese Canadians uprooted in 1942 AND a second set of names of children born after uprooting and up to and including March 31, 1949, after which freedom to return to the coast was fully granted. To set them in stone here is to ensure they are never again forgotten or marginalized.

🍁

Livestream Event Information at Momiji:
Momiji would like to welcome our community to watch the livestream of the monument unveiling in Victoria, BC, from the comfort of the Yone and Coby Kobayashi Auditorium at Momiji Seniors Residence. Momiji will be providing a small, boxed meal for the first 150 community members and 70 tenants registered. Since the event is overlapping with our annual Momiji Bazaar, we are inviting attendees to arrive anytime from Noon to 3:30PM and support our annual bazaar before joining the livestream.

Livestream Event Information at the JCCC:
Thank you for joining the JCCC at the monument unveiling livestream on Saturday, October 3, 2026! Doors will open at 2:30pm EST on October 3, 2026 for sign in, and the introduction video and livestream will begin at 3:30pm EST in Kobayashi Hall. Light refreshments will be served, and a souvenir book will be gifted to all attendees. Registrants will be contacted via email in September to confirm their entrance status (enrolled or waitlist).

🍁

To register to attend the Japanese Canadian Monument opening ceremony livestream at either location, please visit:

English: https://jccc.on.ca/event/2026/10/livestream-viewing-japanese-canadian-monument-opening-ceremony

Japanese: https://jccc.on.ca/ja/event/2026/10/livestream-viewing-japanese-canadian-monument-opening-ceremony

Registration will close at 11:00am EST on September 24, 2026 or once capacity at each location is reached, whichever comes first. Once either location hits capacity, a waitlist will be created, and the JCCC and Momiji will work together to ensure that as many people as possible are able to watch the event.
