Safety should never be conditional. πŸ’œ

Not conditional on who you love. Not conditional on your background. Not conditional on whether the system was built with you in mind.

Indigenous History Month. Pride Month. Two communities overrepresented among survivors. One commitment from us.

For Indigenous women in Ontario, Talk4Healing offers culturally grounded support β€” by Indigenous women, for Indigenous women. Available 24/7 in 14 languages.

Her name deserves to be known. πŸ’œ

This Indigenous History Month, we honour the women and girls whose stories were reduced to statistics β€” whose names left headlines too quickly.

They were whole people. They deserved safety. And the women who share their experiences today deserve it too.

We are here.

You didn't stay because you're weak. You stayed because you were surviving. πŸ’œ

The reasons women stay in abusive relationships are complex, real, and valid. Fear. Financial dependence. Love. Children. Hope that things will change.

None of that is weakness. It is humanity.

When you're ready β€” we're here.

In September 2020, Joyce Echaquan — an Atikamekw woman and mother of seven — used her phone to livestream from her hospital bed at the Hôpital de Lanaudière in Joliette, Quebec, as staff made racist remarks about her. She died shortly after.

The provincial coroner's inquest found that systemic racism contributed to her death. What Joyce captured on video was not an isolated incident β€” it was a window into what Indigenous people had been naming for generations.

Her family and the Atikamekw Nation have advocated for Joyce's Principle: the right of all Indigenous people to equitable access to social and health services, free from all forms of discrimination. The work to see it fully adopted in law continues.

June is Indigenous History Month. This month, we hold both: the richness of Indigenous cultures and the reality of ongoing harm.

We say Joyce Echaquan's name. We hold her story. And we recommit to a world where every woman β€” in every room, in every institution β€” is safe.

If you need support, we are here.

You spoke up. That took everything. And it mattered. πŸ’œ

Speaking the truth about what's happening β€” to a friend, to a counsellor, to yourself β€” is one of the hardest and most powerful things a person can do.

If you're not ready yet, that's okay too. We're here when you are.

This Pride Month, we want to talk about something that doesn't always get enough space in LGBTQ+ conversations: abuse. πŸ’œ

Domestic violence affects same-sex and q***r relationships at rates comparable to β€” and in some cases higher than β€” heterosexual relationships. But LGBTQ+ survivors often face barriers that others don't:

πŸ’œ Fear of not being believed ("How can a woman abuse another woman?")
πŸ’œ Fear of being outed to family, employers, or community
πŸ’œ Loss of the only community that felt safe
πŸ’œ Systems that weren't built with them in mind

If you are experiencing abuse β€” or if you're not sure what you're experiencing β€” you are welcome here. No judgment. No assumptions.

Abuse happens in same-sex relationships too. And it's just as real. πŸ’œ

LGBTQ+ survivors often face unique barriers β€” fear of not being believed, of losing community, of being outed in the process of asking for help.

We want to say this clearly: whoever you are, whatever your relationship looks like β€” you deserve safety. And we are here.

June is Indigenous History Month in Canada. We begin with truth. πŸ’œ

Indigenous women and girls face disproportionate rates of violence and disappearance in this country. This is not a new crisis β€” it is the ongoing result of systems that have historically devalued their lives.

Recognizing this is not enough. Action is required β€” every single day.

If you need support, we are here.
