Last night’s outcome was not the one we had hoped for. New Democrats suffered heavy losses from coast to coast. We will process, reflect on, and learn from the lessons and results together in the days and weeks ahead.
That being said, I truly could not be prouder of our campaign. We ran an incredibly strong local campaign, speaking with more than 14,000 individual voters! We spoke boldly against the genocide in Gaza and for real housing and climate justice in Toronto Centre. We heard from our neighbours about the kind of community and representation they are looking for.
But there were forces working nationally that were beyond our local control. As we reflect on the campaign nationally, I want to hear from all of you about how you see our movement growing in Toronto Centre and across Canada. I am so deeply grateful to our outgoing leader and all the progressive leaders across the NDP who made immense sacrifices to run and work in this election. It is so painful to see the unfairness of our first-past-the-post voting system and how it leaves voters feeling trapped election after election. Part of our process of reflection and renewal in the NDP must include a fight for an electoral system where every vote counts.
And I need to say thank you to all of our supporters for putting your trust in me. I will continue supporting New Democrats and will continue to organize for social and environmental justice in Toronto Centre and across the country. I’m still your neighbour — and I’m not going anywhere.
To every volunteer: every conversation you had, every door you knocked, every phone call you made, every pile of data sheets you entered, every late night and early morning you gave — your support mattered. Your determination and commitment to a more just world still matters.
To every donor: thank you for believing in me and donating to my campaign. Our local ground-game was as strong as it could possibly have been because of your financial contributions. You ensured that our volunteers always had flyers, that phone calls could be made, and that we had a campaign office to work from. This is not the end — just another beginning.
To every candidate who ran in our local race, and to everyone who voted in this election: Canada’s democracy isn’t perfect — but it is stronger because people who disagree can contest their visions for what we want our shared future to look like. I want to congratulate and thank everyone who ran and worked on election campaigns with care and hope for a better Canada.
And finally, I want to thank Kristyn Wong-Tam and the entire Toronto Centre NDP family who had my back throughout this election. We have created a remarkable and caring community of neighbours here in Toronto Centre who show up for each other and fight every day for justice. I could not have done this without you.
With love, hope, and optimism,
Samantha Green
