As Algonquin College - Perth Campus prepares to close, Toby Shannan — former Shopify exec — is stepping in with a bold new vision: a private, not-for-profit college specializing in heritage trades and construction management. The idea is gaining traction with support from municipal and provincial leaders.

Did you know we have a private collection of over 310,000 architectural records?

In honour of World Architecture Day, we’re highlighting the drawings of Frederick John Alexander. Born in Britain in 1849, he came to Ottawa in 1870 and designed a number of the city’s residential, commercial and public buildings.

This villa-residence, built for Mrs. C.L. Gibbs in 1887, is an example of the Queen Anne revival style. This style can be seen in many other Ottawa residences designed by Alexander at the end of the Victorian period.
