Happy Labour Day from the Confederation of Canadian Unions

https://ccu-csc.ca/happy-labour-day-from-the-confederation-of-canadian-unions/

Every September, working people across Canada pause to mark Labour Day. While many view it as a well-deserved long weekend to signify the end of summer, for the labour movement, Labour Day represents something far deeper: a moment rooted in the struggles, victories, and ongoing pursuit of economic justice, equality, and dignity for all workers... The Confederation of Canadian Unions stands proudly in the tradition of solidarity and hope. Together, we will continue building a Canada where every worker is empowered, protected, and respected.

This is incredible news, indeed. From the Nova Scotia Union of Public & Private Employees:

We are incredibly grateful to Rachel Reid, Nova Scotia Native and author of Heated Rivalry, for generously donating $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library. As a result, it appears as though all 10 branches at AVRL will remain open and our members will continue to service the public as they have always wanted to do.

While we are incredibly grateful to Rachel Reid, it shouldn’t have had to come to this. Our libraries shouldn’t have to require generous members of the public to stay open. This generosity has given the government time to come back to the table and provide long-term sustainable funding to libraries across the province.

Bestselling Nova Scotia author Rachel Reid donates $300,000 to Annapolis Valley Regional Library

ANNAPOLIS VALLEY, N.S. – The Annapolis Valley Regional Library (AVRL) has received a gift of $300,000 from bestselling author and Nova Scotia native Rachel Reid, one of Canada’s most celebrated contemporary romance writers and the author of Heated Rivalry.

The donation represents one of the most significant private gifts in AVRL's history and will help strengthen library services across the Annapolis Valley in the months ahead, supporting the library's mission to provide free access to books, literacy, learning and welcoming community spaces for people of all ages.

Julia Merritt, CEO of the Annapolis Valley Regional Library, said the donation represents an extraordinary investment in library services and in the people and communities they serve.

“This is an incredibly generous gift, and we are profoundly grateful to Rachel for choosing to invest in libraries, the Annapolis Valley, and the people our libraries serve,” said Merritt. “Her support will make a meaningful difference and help us continue creating opportunities for people across the region to read, learn and connect.”

The donation will support priority library services across the Annapolis Valley, with additional details on its implementation to be shared as plans are finalized.

“Libraries are one of the most important services governments provide. I credit my local library for being a huge part of the reason I'm a published author today. As essential community cornerstones, libraries provide free resources, information, assistance, and safe spaces to their residents. Nova Scotia governments should be prioritizing libraries, and working to ensure these fundamental branches remain open for their communities,” says Reid.

Reid, whose novels have earned international acclaim and a devoted global readership, has long championed the importance of reading, literacy and accessible public libraries. AVRL also announced that Reid will participate in a special ticketed public event this September celebrating libraries, reading and community. Additional details will be released later this week.

As a significant private contribution, Reid’s gift complements, but does not replace, the critical need for an increase in the stable annual public funding and strong municipal and provincial partnerships needed to sustain library services over the long term. AVRL remains committed to working with its government partners to ensure communities across the region continue to have access to strong, vibrant public libraries.

University of Manitoba Labour Studies professor Adam King spoke to the Confederation of Canadian Unions in Winnipeg about unions and some of the social, class and political divisions that exist between working people.

In this insightful session, Dr. King delivers a critical analysis of the modern labour movement, focusing on the growing rifts and conflicts within the working class across Canada. Over the past decade, economic uncertainty, shifting industrial landscapes, labour market transformations, and evolving political realignments have reshaped how workers view organized labour, public policy, and collective advocacy.

In today’s uncertain economic landscape, young workers and employees across Canada deserve fairness, security, and respect on the job. The Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU) is dedicated to putting workers first through independent, democratic union representation that protects your workplace rights and helps build a better future.

Why Join a Democratic Canadian Union?

* Higher Pay and Better Benefits: Unionized workers consistently earn higher wages, better health coverage, and pension plans that secure your future.

* Workplace Protection & Rights: Don't face unfair management or toxic workplace conditions alone. Unions provide strong collective agreements, safety protections, and grievance procedures.

* Union Democracy: Every member has a voice and a vote. In a democratic union confederation like the CCU, decisions are made directly by Canadian workers — not by distant corporate executives or foreign headquarters.

* Inclusive and Empowering Community: Experience a supportive work environment where your ideas are valued, your voice is heard, and everyone is accepted.

* Independent and Canadian-Led: We focus entirely on the priorities, social justice goals, and economic needs of workers right here in Canada.

Whether you are a young worker starting your first career, new to the Canadian labour force, or looking to organize your current job site, you don't have to settle for less. It’s time to take charge of your career, stand up for worker solidarity, and build a stronger workplace.

On behalf of the thousands of members of the Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU-CSC), I am writing to share our thoughts and perspectives regarding the tentative collective agreement reached at WestJet. As Canadians, we all share a common goal: a stable, safe, and prosperous country built on fair work, strong industries, and mutual respect.

In this spirit of collaboration, we write to express our solidarity with WestJet’s dedicated workforce and to highlight the value of supporting a natural, negotiated process at the bargaining table.
