The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest funding organization in the world supporting the international exchange of students and scholars. Since it was founded in 1925, more than 1.5 million scholars in Germany and abroad have received DAAD funding. It is a registered association and its members are German institutions of higher education and student bodies. DAAD supports the int

ernationalization of German universities, promotes German studies and the German language abroad, assists developing countries in establishing effective higher education systems and advises decision makers on matters of cultural, education and development policy.

The central theme of the recent annual meeting of the German Research Foundation (DFG) was protecting and strengthening the freedom and independence of research in the face of increasing hostility and attacks, including from in Germany. The EU’s Erasmus+ program has reached a historic milestone: since the programme began in 1987, one million students from Germany have gone abroad for a study or internship placement with funding from Erasmus+ with nearly the same number coming the other way. These figures were announced last month by Germany’s National Agency for Erasmus+ University Cooperation located within the DAAD headquarters in Bonn.
