Ralph Thornton Community Centre The Ralph Thornton Community Centre has been a cornerstone of the vibrant South Riverdale community.

Over the years, RTCC has played a key role in bringing residents together to identify, discuss and address local issues and needs. We strive to promote the true spirit of community and build a healthy, inclusive neighbourhood. Our supportive environment enables citizens to connect with each other and access important resources. Everyone in South Riverdale, regardless of race, culture, gender, income or social status is welcome at the RTCC. Whether you are interested in child and youth programs, our computer resource centre, recreation and education, community news and activism or simply a meeting space to host your own gatherings, we have room for you.

On this day (Oct. 18) in 1929, Canada’s “Famous Five” won a historic legal case that changed the course of history. Their efforts ensured that women were officially recognized as “persons” under the law and could be appointed to the Senate.

This decision opened doors for greater equality and participation in public life. Persons Day is a time to remember their courage and reflect on how we can continue building a society that is fair and inclusive for everyone.

Today, take a moment to learn about this history, listen to different voices, or simply offer understanding and support to those around you. Small actions like these help bring us closer to equality.

🌈 Today is International Coming Out Day 🌈

Since 1988, this day has celebrated visibility and the power of living authentically. Coming out takes courage, but it is also a very personal choice. No one should ever be forced to come out before they are ready.

Not everyone has the chance to come out in a safe and supportive environment. Without support, the pressure can take a heavy toll on one's mental health. In Canada, almost 30% of 2SLGBTQ+ people report their mental health is “poor,” compared with only 9% of non-2SLGBTQ+ people (https://buff.ly/tAhIzHD). Youth are especially vulnerable: more than half (56%) of 2SLGBTQ+ youth meet the criteria for at least one mental health disorder, compared with 29% of cisgender heterosexual youth (https://buff.ly/9cVTIwd).

On this day, we honor those who have come out, and we stand with those who cannot. Being an ally can be simple. Listen. Don’t judge. Respect boundaries. This can help create safe spaces.

October is Women's History Month in Canada. Throughout Canada's history, countless women have contributed to the social, cultural, and economic development of our country. Their hard work and perseverance have helped create a better and more inclusive Canada. Since 1992, the Government of Canada has designated October as Women's History Month to celebrate the outstanding achievements of women and girls throughout history.

Today, we honor not only the pioneers of the past but also the women who are shaping the future. Women's History Month also reminds us to continue to remove barriers so that everyone can fully participate in Canada's social, cultural, and economic life. Only in an environment of equality can innovation and progress truly be achieved.

RTCC will be closed on September 30, 2026, in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This day honours the children who never returned home, the Survivors of Canada’s residential school system, and the families and communities whose lives have been impacted across generations.

It is a time to acknowledge these truths, to reflect on the enduring impacts of colonialism and anti-Indigenous racism, and to recognize our shared responsibility in advancing justice, equality, and healing.

It calls on settlers in Canada to listen deeply to Indigenous voices, learn from Indigenous knowledge and teachings, and commit to meaningful reconciliation. It also invites us to deepen our understanding of Indigenous practices, land stewardship, and the treaties that shape the lands where we live, work, and gather.

This year, the Ralph Thornton Community Centre and its children and youth programs are highlighting the 94 Calls to Action established by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

These calls provide a roadmap for advancing reconciliation and fostering a more equitable future for Indigenous peoples and all Canadians.
