Screen Composers Guild of Canada

Screen Composers Guild of Canada The Screen Composers Guild of Canada (SCGC) is a national association of professional music composers and music producers for film, television and media.

The Screen Composers Guild of Canada is a national association of professional composers and producers of music for screen-based media including film, television and interactive digital media. Founded in 1980, the SCGC is certified under the Federal Status of the Artist Act to represent all English-speaking screen composers in Canada. We work to maintain the high quality of Canadian screen music t

hrough professional development, mentoring and workshops. We facilitate networking via discussion forums and a variety of guild events. We partner with industry groups and festivals to increase member access and operate an extensive composer directory to connect creators with clients. We also advocate at the highest level by promoting and protecting the rights of screen composers with producers, broadcasters, government agencies and lawmakers. SCGC membership is affordable and gives immediate access to a range of benefits that serve and support composers in our sector. Learn more at www.screencomposers.ca.

The Screen Composers Guild of Canada recognizes, with appreciation, that today’s AI Strategy does not create a text-and-data-mining (TDM) exception that would have opened the door for AI developers to use Canadian composers’ work without attribution, remuneration, or transparency. Said SCGC President John Rowley: “SCGC appreciates that the Government did not agree to demands by AI developers for special shortcuts or legal loopholes, which would only harm creative livelihoods, damage creators’ brands, and limit incentives to create and invest in new Canadian content."

CRTC decisions to stabilize funding for Canadian and Indigenous content & promote their discoverability

The Screen Composers Guild of Canada welcomes the CRTC’s recent broadcast policy decisions as the Commission continues to fulfill its mandate to support a modern and sustainable Canadian broadcasting system. These decisions will help to ensure that the work of Canadian screen composers and other creators is supported and promoted fairly by everyone who benefits from access to Canadian audiences and public funding.

SCGC President John Rowley says: “Culture goes to the heart of who we are. We’re grateful to the CRTC for its work to ensure that the future of Canadian and Indigenous content is equitable, sustainable and vibrant.

We look forward to ongoing collaboration with the CRTC and our industry partners as we continue to advocate for a sustainable, equitable and sovereign future for Canadian and Indigenous culture and its creators.”

Harmony for the Modern Storyteller - Beginner with Erica Procunier (starts April 28th - online)

Unlock the emotional power of harmony. 🎹✨ Explore how harmonic language shapes modern storytelling — from the tension and resolution of functional harmony to the expressive freedom of post-tonal landscapes.

This 4-week journey is designed for composers who want to decode their own harmonic instincts, understand why certain progressions move us, and expand their musical language beyond the familiar.
