With the upcoming municipal election, our Community Ambassadors were onsite at our Lawrence Heights Community Food Space this week speaking with community members about the issues that matter most to them.

Everyone should have their voice heard, but barriers to voting, including the cost of transportation to the polling station, means not everyone can.

That's why we're inviting everyone to North York Harvest Food Bank's Community Fair this Friday at Lawrence Heights Community Centre!
ca, , NOTICE, and more will be onsite to support with nonpartisan information about the election, and we're arranging group transportation for Ward 8 Eglinton-Lawrence residents to advanced polling stations. 🗳️

Whether you're planning to vote or not, everyone is welcome at the fair! Join us for a family-friendly day of good food, music, games, prizes, and community resources.

We're sad to see summer go, but we’re proud of all we achieved together this season! 🍊 🍅

Together we made healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables more accessible, in addition to the essential non-perishable donations we serve every week.

In fact, thanks to community support and partnerships, we’re proud to share that 27% of ALL food served across our network is now fresh! That’s up from 20% just a year ago.

When we open our new Community Food Hub, it will include nearly 5,000 sq. ft. of refrigerated space, DRAMATICALLY increasing our ability to store and distribute fresh produce, dairy, and culturally relevant foods year-round!

No one should be priced out of fresh food. Read more at northyorkharvest.com/fresh-summer to see how providing access to a wider variety of food supports health, dignity, and choice.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we’re reflecting on the connection between colonization, food, and sovereignty.

For Indigenous peoples, food sovereignty has been profoundly disrupted by colonization.

Colonial policies restricted and, in many cases, banned Indigenous peoples from hunting, harvesting, gardening and practicing cultural traditions connected to food. These policies disrupted access to traditional foods and contributed to the loss of knowledge passed down through generations.

Today, food insecurity and poverty disproportionately impacts Indigenous communities

Reconciliation through food sovereignty can look like:
🍅 Protecting Indigenous peoples’ rights to hunt, harvest, grow and access traditional foods
🍅 Supporting Indigenous-led food programs, organizations and knowledge-sharing
🍅 Making healthy, culturally appropriate food more accessible and affordable
🍅 Addressing the systemic barriers that contribute to poverty and food insecurity
🍅 Recognizing that Indigenous communities have always been leaders in creating and sustaining their own food systems

Indigenous-led initiatives are already doing this work. Today, we honour the truth, listen to Indigenous voices and recognize that reconciliation requires action, including action to support Indigenous food sovereignty.

Please note North York Harvest Food Bank will be closed today for learning and reflection on how we can contribute to reconciliation in our work and individually.
