When Isabella heard a neighbour say they could only afford one meal a day, she knew she wanted to help.

She applied for a $5,000 youth grant and launched Kindness Kitchen, an initiative to fight food insecurity, and partnered with North York Harvest Food Bank to turn her idea into action.

We connected Isabella with our partner agency, Mount Zion Filipino Seventh-day Adventist Church and FoodReach, our social enterprise that provides affordable food to the non-profit sector. Together, theyโ€™re getting nutritious food to more neighbours while supporting North York Harvest's programs that power food access, employment training, and sustainable livelihoods.

โ€œIt feels nice to know that Iโ€™m making an impact because I wanted to relieve some of the burden on families, especially with food โ€” itโ€™s something everyone needs,โ€ Isabella says.

Thanks to incredible neighbours like Isabella, when someone says, โ€œI can only afford one meal a day,โ€ our community has the capacity to respond.

September is Hunger Action Month, and we hope this story inspires you to think about the role you can play in fighting hunger, just like Isabella. Get involved at northyorkharvest.com/get-involved

Can you believe school starts next week!?๐ŸŽ

At North York Harvest Food Bank, a new school year means a busy warehouse. Our social enterprise FoodReach plays a key role in student nutrition: Through a logistics partnership, FoodReach helps deliver healthy food to 78 student nutrition programs in Toronto.

FoodReach also provides nourishing snacks to 82 After School and Youth Hub programs at Toronto Public Library branches across the city!

When summer hits and school snack programs pause, weโ€™re there too. As a proud recipient of Food Banks Canada's After the Bell program, we fill the nutrition gap all summer long with special green snack bags for kids to keep them nourished.

With your support, we're there for kids all year long. One in four clients we support is a child, and all across our network we make sure our smallest community members can access the nutritious food their growing bodies need to thrive.

Thank you for being there for us, so we can be there for kids โ€” every day.

A new backpack may seem like a small expense, but when every dollar is already spoken for, it can be one more thing a parent has to worry about.

This month, thanks to the generosity of the Tzu Chi Foundation families visiting our Albion Library Community Food Space had one less expense on their back-to-school list. Foundation members were there to hand out brand-new backpacks, helping children head into the school year feeling prepared and ready to learn.

Weโ€™re so grateful to the Tzu Chi Foundation for showing up for children in our community, and helping make the start of a new school year a little brighter. Thank you!

"Did you know cucumber is a fruit?" ๐Ÿฅ’

A young community member asked us this as she pulled it from a green snack bag at our Albion Library Community Food Space. Then came the milk, kiwi, cheese snacks, granola bars, and more.

She pulled out each item, excitedly showing us everything in her bag.

That moment of joy happened because we're a proud recipient of Food Banks Canada's After the Bell program, which provides healthy, kid-friendly snacks to nourish our youngest neighbours all summer long.

Thanks to this incredible program, North York Harvest Food Bank has been able to distribute 8,616 After the Bell bags across our 4 food spaces and 8 partner agencies.

Thatโ€™s 8,616 moments when a family could breathe a little easier.

And 8,616 opportunities for a child to enjoy a healthy snack that fuels the play and laughter that comes with summer.

Thank you to Food Banks Canada for helping us make these moments possible, and to everyone who helps us be there for kids, all summer long. โค๏ธ

Cohort #20 of our Leadership in Logistics program graduated this week!๐Ÿฅณ

In a few days, they'll embark on new careers in warehousing and logistics at Canadian Tire

Over four weeks, our paid training program creates hands-on learning and skills development opportunities right in our warehouse.

Students gain the skills and certifications they'll need to succeed while helping North York Harvest Food Bank support 30,000 clients facing food insecurity every month.

It's a win-win: Individuals facing employment barriers access pathways to full-time jobs, and North York Harvest gets support with daily operations.

At the end, successful graduates receive full-time employment with benefits. We know a job is an important step towards stability, but for some students, it's the first of many towards a sustainable livelihood. That's why students are connected with staff who can continue to support them after graduation by connecting them with resources like housing, furniture, and healthcare services.

We couldn't be prouder of our students, and the partnerships that have and continue to make this transformative program possible: Canadian Tire Corporation, United Way Greater Toronto, The Learning Enrichment Foundation, and Metcalf Foundation.

Best of luck to our graduates in your new roles!
