October marks , a time to highlight the amazing achievements of women and girls, past and present!

Molly Williams is recognized as the first known female and black firefighter in North America.

In 1818, with New York City's Oceanus Engine Company No. 11, Molly helped fight a fire during a major blizzard when male firefighters were scarce due to a cholera outbreak.

Today, her legacy is carried on through Camp Molly, an Ontario-based camp where young women can learn about firefighting as a viable and rewarding career.

Today marks International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

This year’s theme is “Resilience at Home,” which is why we’re spotlighting our Ontario Corps partner Habitat for Humanity's Emergency Response Hubs in Windsor-Essex, Hamilton and Northumberland: https://www.habitatwindsor.org/emergency-readiness-program

Since 1991, these three Habitat for Humanity affiliates have built, repaired, and restored more than 620 homes in Ontario. They are now building on that experience by training volunteers and homeowners to prepare to withstand home emergencies and natural disasters.

As an Ontario Corps partner, they have the critical equipment and training to assist communities and help create a more resilient Ontario.

Emergencies are stressful and sometimes people need a little extra support to get through them. Our Ontario Corps partner, ATTCH Niagara is here to help.

ATTCH Niagara was the first integrative trauma-specific treatment centre of its kind in Canada. Founded in 2013, the organization provides specialized therapy for those affected by trauma, neglect or loss.

As an Ontario Corps partner, they have been called upon to provide mental health support in communities impacted by a disaster.
