Ontario Green Screen (OGS) is an initiative of Ontario Creates that supports the province’s screen-based industries in reducing their environmental footprint. OGS provides tools, resources, training, and incentives to help film, television, and animation productions adopt sustainable practices and build a greener industry in Ontario.

Meet this month's Ambassador, Astra Burka.

Astra is passionate about creating a better planet through implementation of green measures and this passion guides her in her role as Emeritus Co-Chair of DGC Green Ontario. In this role she has prioritized training and education of DGC members in sustainable best practices. Through Astra’s efforts, more DGC Ontario members are now asking the right questions and acting on sustainable measures in their respective departments. Through her leadership, Astra was involved in the creation of a permanent E-Waste Donation Box in the DGC Ontario Members Hub, giving Members an easy way to keep old tech out of landfills.

In partnership with Reboot Canada, DGC members can now sustainably dispose of their electronic waste (computers, cellphones, hard drives, etc), where many items will be refurbished and provided to low-income families as part of their “reSTART” (digital equity) program.

It’s amazing to see the impact this initiative has had after just one year with Astra’s leadership.

This month’s Ontario Green Screen Ambassador – Robyn Laliberte - is paving the way for students to reduce the impacts of physical production on the environment. As an independent producer and Humber Polytechnic professor, Robyn centers on helping the next generation build sustainability into everyday production decisions. She has been instrumental in signing Humber Polytechnic up to participate in the Green Film School Alliance (GFSA). Since then, students at Humber have been using the PEACHy (student version) sustainability checklist, which is aligned with the Environmental Media Association’s EMA Green Seal program. Robyn has been influential in supporting over a dozen student productions to-date in achieving their Green Seal production certification, positioning Humber as one of the leading post-secondary schools across North America implementing sustainability initiatives.

By joining the community, Robyn (and her students) are contributing to meaningful, long term change across Ontario’s screen industry.

March 30 marks the International Day of Zero Waste, with this year’s focus on a critical issue: food waste.

Established by the United Nations to address the growing global waste crisis. Recognizing this day is more than symbolic. It’s an opportunity to reflect on how our productions source, serve, and manage food, and to strengthen practices that reduce waste at every stage.

Reducing food waste is one of the most practical and cost-effective climate solutions available. For Ontario’s screen industry, that means rethinking how food is planned, served, stored, donated, and composted on set.

Across the province, there are strong systems in place to help. Organizations such as Second Harvest and Feed Ontario, along with municipal green bin and organics diversion programs, provide pathways to redirect surplus food and keep valuable resources out of landfill.

Let’s continue working toward a circular, lower-waste future for Ontario’s screen industry 🌎💚

Did you know 46.5% of all food in Canada is wasted every year? At the same time, thousands of people across our communities are facing food insecurity. That’s why food donation matters and why tools and policies that support it make such a difference.

Thanks to collaboration with Second Harvest Deuxième Récolte , we’ve been able to measure the impact the film and television industry is making. Since 2022, Ontario productions have donated more than 27,130 meals, valued at $86,500.
The environmental impact is just as impressive. These donations have helped avoid more than 107,700 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, which is the equivalent to 18,643 litres of gasoline... and that’s only what’s been tracked through the app.

Ontario’s Food Donation Act also helps make these contributions possible by providing protections for those who donate surplus food back to the community.

If you’re unsure how carbon calculators apply to your role, or you’ve been meaning to understand them better, this session makes it practical and approachable. You’ll learn how the most widely used calculators in North America work, what data productions need to track, and how these tools can pinpoint where emissions are highest — so teams can focus efforts where they matter most.

The facilitated format gives you the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, and learn alongside peers from across Ontario. Prefer to learn independently? A self-directed option is also available, but registration is still required.

The course is FREE, virtual, and designed for Ontario’s film and television community.

March 18 is Global Recycling Day ♻️, a reminder of the important role recycling plays in conserving natural resources, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting a circular economy.

Recyclables aren’t waste; they’re valuable materials that can be recovered, reused, and reintroduced into production cycles. By making thoughtful choices about consumption and waste management, we can help reduce our environmental impact both on set and in our communities.

Small actions add up! Let’s continue building habits that support a more circular, sustainable future for Ontario’s screen industry and beyond.
