An overview from CPRE Oxfordshire as to why this matters in Cherwell: https://www.cpreoxon.org.uk/news/why-is-cherwell-under-pressure-to-approve-so-many-houses-and-why-isnt-it-working/

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/762214 -content

We ask the government to pause housebuilding targets and consult local communities to identify where substantial house building is needed, not where developers prefer to build. We worry about developers appealing rejected applications and councils and communities often having no funds for a defence.

Wild service trees are one of Britain’s rarer native trees, often overlooked but full of history and ecological value.

Mike Coker explores where to find them, how to recognise them, and why they matter in this great blog post: https://ecoworrier133969581.wordpress.com/2025/09/23/wild-service-trees/

Mike spoke at our Spring Recorders’ Conference, and his blog is packed with brilliant, thoughtful posts on trees, wildlife, and recording. Well worth a read if you missed his talk (or want more!)

We're breaking ground in Banbury!

While our team has been working hard setting up on site, the weather has put on quite a show for us! From heatwave to rain, the days are always changing. And we’re expecting to find just as much variety in the archaeology over the next few months, including evidence of Roman and early medieval activity.

So watch this space, as we’ll be sharing lots of great finds and stories from site!

MOLA are carrying out excavations at Banbury on behalf of David Wilson Homes.

🌿 Do you know someone making a difference for Oxfordshire’s countryside?

As CPRE celebrates its 100th anniversary, we're looking for the county’s countryside champions to enter the CPRE Centenary Awards.

From community groups restoring nature and improving access to green spaces, to volunteers, campaigners and innovative local projects, we want to hear about the people helping the our countryside thrive.

Our new Director, Marcus Gilleard, said: “I’ve already been struck by the extraordinary commitment and passion shown by people working to protect and enhance Oxfordshire’s countryside. These awards are a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on their efforts and celebrate the difference they’re making in communities across the county.”

There are 6 different categories, from Best Housing Solution to Young countryside Changemaker, and the winners will be announced at a special awards presentation at the House of Commons in October as part of CPRE’s centenary celebrations.

🏆 Nominate yourself, a project, a volunteer or an organisation today.

⏰ Nominations close on 24 June.
