Municipality of Colchester

Municipality of Colchester Colchester County’s central location is ideal for recreation, shopping, dining, and more!

The Municipality of the County of Colchester is nestled at the head of the famous Bay of Fundy, and is home to long established communities that include Bible Hill, Old Barns, Brookfield, Upper Stewiacke, Salmon River, Valley, Tatamagouche, North River, Debert and Great Village. It is the third largest Municipality by geographic size, the fourth largest by population in Nova Scotia and employs abo

ut 125 full time employees. Home to nearly 38,000 residents, it is one of the few municipalities in the province experiencing positive population growth. Its nearly 3,500 square kilometers of area is home to some of Nova Scotia’s spectacular scenic places and beautiful parks and trail systems, which cover 14 kilometers of diverse landscapes and topography - from the Minas Basin of the Bay of Fundy to the Northumberland Strait, from the Cobequid Mountains to river valleys, from Acadian forests to pastoral landscapes. As a centrally-located municipality, Colchester is surrounded by economic opportunity. Colchester sits at the junction of Highway 102 and the Trans-Canada Highway 104 along the Halifax-Moncton Growth Corridor, approximately an hour from Atlantic Canada’s largest city, Halifax, and a forty-five minute drive from the region’s largest international airport, the Halifax-Stanfield International Airport. Its geographical area also encompasses the towns of Stewiacke and Truro – the latter being the largest town in Nova Scotia, and a key partner in the development and delivery of services to our residents. Together, these elements contribute to the region’s economic stability and hold promising prospects for future growth.

NOTICE TO SEWER SERVICED RESIDENTS OF GREAT VILLAGE:

Customers of the sewer system are reminded that flushing of any type of cleaning or sanitary wipe is not permitted, even if the package says 'flushable'.

Over the last few weeks we have seen a dramatic increase in the volume of wipes in our sewer system. This has lead to equipment damage and late night maintenance calls, and can also lead to sewer backups. Remember to only flush poo, p*e and toilet paper. '

Happy Pride Month Colchester!

While we are unable to hold a flag raising ceremony in person due to our building renovations, we will be proudly flying the Pride Flag during Colchester’s Pride week!

We are excited to share that we are going to be supporting many of Truro Pride Society's great events throughout the month!

We are inviting you to join us for our Pride Rocks Challenge and help spread a little colour, kindness, and Pride throughout Colchester.

Paint a colourful rock and hide it somewhere in your community for others to find spreading joy for Pride Month & beyond. Whether you join us at one of our paint parties or gather your own school group, club, friends, or family to create together, everyone is welcome to take part.

Let’s brighten our communities with rainbow rocks, celebrate inclusion, and show our allyship across Colchester! Don’t forget to share a photo and tag Colchester and Truro Pride so we can celebrate with you. Earth Smart Note: Let’s do our part to protect the planet. If you choose to hide your rock for someone else to find, aim to leave them in a space that won’t disrupt the natural environment!

One day last week, a garbage truck experienced a fire within its load and was required to safely offload the contents in a nearby parking lot. Local firefighters responded quickly and successfully extinguished the fire.

It appears the cause may have been batteries or a battery-operated device improperly disposed of in the garbage. Batteries can ignite when damaged or compacted inside collection trucks, creating serious safety risks for drivers, firefighters, and the public.

Please DO NOT place batteries in your recycling or garbage bags. Please dispose of batteries safely by taking them to a battery drop off location, usually your local pharmacies and Enviro-Depots. Call Helpline 902-895-4777 to find the nearest one to you.

This week, is Access Awareness Week and the Municipality of Colchester is proud to be flying the Access Awareness flag beginning Sunday May 31st through to Saturday June 6th. Access Awareness Week Nova Scotia is driven by a single goal; to change the narrative for persons with disabilities. The 2026 theme is Disability Justice: Stronger Together, First Voice Leading Change.

Due to renovations, we are unable to host a flag-raising ceremony this year. However, we want to emphasize the importance of this week and the opportunity it provides for us all to come together to listen, learn, and take action on our commitments to tear down physical and systemic barriers.

Partnership is what drives this work and helps ensure its success. The Municipality of Colchester is proud to work alongside organizations and groups represented on our Regional Accessibility Advisory Committee. We encourage everyone to check out the information resources and community event opportunities happening during Access Awareness Week.

Together, we can build a more accessible Colchester where everyone can participate fully and diversity of ability is valued and respected.
