Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark

Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark Please see description of this endeavor on the Page Feed. What is a Geopark? The Global Geoparks Network is supported by UNESCO.

A Geopark is an area recognized by the Global Geoparks Network with geological heritage of international significance. The geology in a Geopark is linked to sites with interesting archaeology, wildlife, history, folklore and culture. Tourism industry promotion in a Geopark focusses on highlighting the geographical character of a place. Geoparks also inform about the sustainable use and need for na

tural resources, whether they are mined (like metallurgical coal), quarried or harnessed from the surrounding environment, while at the same time promoting respect for the environment and the integrity of the landscape. Compared with national or provincial parks which are often “top-down”, government-initiated projects, a Geopark is typically a grassroots, community-driven initiative that depends on local passion and “sense-of-place". Information can also be found at www.trmf.ca

Join us on June 21 for our National Indigenous People’s Day Celebration and take part in a full day of learning, culture, and community at the Tumbler Ridge Visitor Centre starting at 10am!

We are excited to welcome Lawrence A. Roy Jr. for a Hoop Dancing presentation following the Opening Ceremonies at 10:00 AM. Lawrence will also be offering Hoop Dancing lessons from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, giving attendees a chance to learn, participate, and experience this beautiful cultural tradition.

There will also be two amazing hands on workshops happening throughout the day:

From 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM, join the Dream Catcher Workshop with Stan Fraser. There are only 20 spots available, no registration is required, and supplies will be available while they last.

From 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, join Knowledge Keeper Nathan Scott for What is Medicine, where you can learn about local plants and herbs, their healing properties, and the knowledge connected to the land.

This is a wonderful opportunity to come together, celebrate Indigenous culture, learn from Knowledge Keepers and performers, and take part in meaningful activities for all ages.

Thank you to our supporters Capital Power, West Moberly Industrial Metalwork, Conuma Resources, and the District of Tumbler Ridge for helping make this event possible.
