⚠️ Heads up if you're driving Highway 4 later this month ⚠️

Mainroad Mid-Island Contracting crews will be installing a cross culvert on Highway 4, just east of Cathedral Grove near Port Alberni.

📅 Monday, October 19 to Wednesday, October 28 (weekdays only)

🕗 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Traffic will be down to a single lane through the work zone. Minor delays are expected, so give yourself a little extra time on trips to and from Port Alberni.

Please slow down. Follow the signs and the traffic control crews. Those workers have families waiting for them at home.

🎃 Pumpkin Carving + Movie Night!

Bring the whole family to t̓uk̓ʷaaʔatḥiic hišimyiły̓ak (Toquaht Gathering Place) on Friday, October 23, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.

We'll carve and paint pumpkins while watching a family-friendly Halloween movie.

Pumpkins, supplies and snacks are provided, and you're welcome to bring your own pumpkin too.

Small prizes go to the best pumpkins of the night!

A note about food hampers

We want to clear up some confusion from our recent post about food hamper delivery. Our wording made it sound like the hampers were a Nation program. We're sorry for that.

Food hampers are not a Toquaht Nation program. The hampers in our recent post come from the KUU-US Crisis Line Society, which supports people in need across the region. We're grateful for their care for our community.

We've also heard questions about a $400 deposit. That deposit was to cover food losses from a power outage several years ago. We understand how it may have caused confusion, and we're happy to talk it through.

If you live in the Alberni Valley and could use some support, KUU-US is a wonderful resource. You can drop in for a food hamper Monday to Friday, 11 am to 3 pm, at 4589 Adelaide Street. Families with children 17 and under can also book a monthly family hamper by calling 250-723-2323 ext. 227.

ATTENTION RESIDENTS OF MACOAH

Two mother bears with cubs have been seen close to community. Mothers are very protective of their young, so please give them plenty of space.

A few ways to keep everyone safe:

Keep garbage, compost and recycling inside or locked up until pickup.

Bring pet food in, and take down bird feeders for now.

Keep children close and pets on a leash, especially at dawn and dusk.

Make noise when walking, so bears know you're there.

Never approach or feed a bear.

If you see a bear, stay calm. Don't run. Give it room and back away slowly.

If a bear is a threat to people or safety, call 911 or the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.

This week, members of our team wore orange together for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We wore it for the children who never came home. We wore it for the survivors and families who carry their memory with them.

Our teachings remind us that hišukma c̓awaak, everything is one. Reconciliation lives in the small ways we take care of each other, ʔuuʔaałuk, through every season of the year. We carry that forward together.

Calling Toquaht youth! 🎉

Toquaht Nation is supporting up to 12 youth to attend Gathering Our Voices 2027, March 15 to 18 in Victoria. It's four days of workshops and connection with Indigenous youth from across B.C. We want you there.

Who can apply
✔️ Registered Toquaht citizens aged 14 to 24
✔️ If you're 19 or older, you'll need a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check

Chaperones are needed too.

Hanna, our Education Manager, is going. We're looking for 1 or 2 more adults, 21 or older, to come along and support our youth. A Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check are required.

Have a reliable vehicle? Let us know. It will help with travel.

Our Toquaht government offices will be closed today.

We honour the children who never came home. We honour the Survivors, and their families and communities who carry this history every day.

To our citizens, at home and away: wear orange, be gentle with yourselves, and lean on one another.
