Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec-Université Laval researcher Dr. Naglaa Shoukry, CTN+ researcher Petronela Ancuta, and their team are shedding new light on one of the greatest challenges in HIV research: understanding why the virus remains in the body despite treatment.

Their research, published in The Lancet eBioMedicine, shows that may contribute to the formation of reservoirs where HIV can remain hidden for long periods, making it impossible to completely eliminate the virus.

Drs. Keith Fowke and Julie Lajoie have been working for years on CTN 316, 'The Aspirin Study'. They were tackling the question of whether aspirin could prevent s*x workers in Kenya from acquiring HIV. While the initial results weren't what they were hoping for, the study instead acts as a case-study of how science drives innovation in unexpected ways.

Canada has ended s***m donor restrictions for gay & bis*xual men in “precedent-setting” move.

Dr. Mona Loutfy, who specializes in infectious diseases and co-lead of the CTN+ Ontario Regional Team, reportedly wrote that HIV testing methods today “are highly sensitive and accurate, such that there is effectively no residual risk associated with current testing methods.”

A new free online course is helping learners from the and communities apply their expertise to clinical study design and management.

Launched this past spring, the Community Science Champions Program covers topics like the different kinds of medical research, the laws that regulate them, and the many roles that community members can play within the process.

“We wanted to create more than a training program,” said Enrico Mandarino, co-chair of the CTN+ Community Leadership Team. “We wanted to build a community of informed, confident leaders who understand clinical research, ask meaningful questions, contribute to research design, and help bridge the gap between researchers and the communities they serve.”

Infectious disease physicians and CTN+ researchers Dr. John Gill and Dr. Raynell Lang have launched a national consortium to find solutions to prevent the spread of HIV in Canada amid global funding cuts.

They worry that these cuts could lead to a “resurgence of the HIV epidemic,” which could have implications across Canada, including in Alberta, where they're based. “Ignoring it or thinking that’s their problem, not ours, is very unwise,” said Dr. Gill.

The CTN+ Prairies Regional Team and SPIKE Hub-IMPaCT are excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2027–28 SPIKE Hub–IMPaCT Trial Leaders Training Awards! 🏅

This program is designed to support trainees, clinicians, and community-based researchers from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta who are interested in designing, leading, and conducting inclusive, equity-focused clinical trials addressing and s*xually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs).

Successful applicants will receive:
• One of four $10,000 training awards
• Immersive learning experiences
• Dedicated mentorship from experienced clinical trial leaders
• Accessible online learning
• Funding to attend the in-person annual summit
• The successful candidates will develop their own clinical trial proposal during the immersive year

The program will help participants transform innovative ideas into competitive clinical trial funding proposals while building the knowledge and skills needed to lead impactful clinical research.
