Looking down at a Black-tailed Prairie Dog burrow?
🕷️You might be looking into the ultimate spider sanctuary!
While Prairie Dogs are famous for building vast underground tunnel systems, abandoned burrows are prime real estate for Black Widow Spiders. With little shade on the open prairie, these deep burrows offer a dark, climate-controlled refuge that shelters spiders from predators and harsh weather.
Did you know that Black Widow venom is roughly 15 times more potent than that of most rattlesnakes? But don't panic! Despite their fearsome reputation, encounters between people and these secretive arachnids are rare. They are naturally shy and prefer to flee over fight. Even when a Black Widow spider bites as a self-defense mechanism, they typically inject only a small amount of venom, saving their powerful venom for their prey.
🕸️Black Widows weave strong, tangled webs across burrow entrances, transforming prairie dog burrows into highly effective insect traps. These quiet, underground homes provide the perfect place for these nocturnal spiders to hunt, shelter, and raise their young.

Prairie dog towns are busy places, and there’s always something going on. Just remember to give these little gossipers plenty of space and observe them from a safe distance. After all, you don’t want to become the subject of tomorrow’s conversation. 😉

🍂 One last prairie getaway, anyone? 🏕️
Camping season at Grasslands National Park is winding down, with the final weekend of camping coming up over the Thanksgiving long weekend in October.
If you’ve been putting off that prairie camping trip, consider this your sign! 😉 Pack your sleeping bag, cozy layers and your sense of adventure, and come enjoy the crisp fall air, migrating birds and spectacular views. ✨

💧Make sure to bring any water you will need as there is no water available in the campgrounds after September 30th.

🍂🎶 Turn up the volume on fall in Grasslands National Park! 🎶🍂
Fall has its own soundtrack on the prairie—and it’s a pretty good one. 👂🌾
Listen closely and you might hear the calls of migrating birds passing through on their journey south. Look up and you may even spot some of the musicians responsible! 🐦✈️
And when the sun goes down? That’s when the evening chorus really gets interesting. 🌅🌙 The prairie might go quiet for a moment before a chorus of coyotes starts howling in the distance. 🐺
No speakers. No playlist. No subscription required. Just wide-open prairie and nature doing what nature does best.
So, this fall, take a moment to slow down, listen, and enjoy the sounds of the season. You never know what might be on the prairie playlist. 🎵🌾

If you’ve noticed new antennas popping up at existing structures in and near Grasslands NP, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you! This summer, Birds Canada installed four new Motus Wildlife Tracking System (https://motus.org/) towers in the area. These automated radio telemetry stations are part of an international collaborative network that supports research and education on migratory wildlife using coordinated automated radio telemetry.
Think of the towers as giant, ultra-sensitive ears listening for tiny, lightweight nanotags worn by birds, bats, and even large insects!
When a tagged animal flies within 10 to 15 km of a tower, its unique signal can be detected and uploaded to the shared database managed by Birds Canada. Because grasslands provide vital breeding grounds for declining prairie species, these towers will help researchers better understand migration routes, identify important stopover sites, and support conservation efforts along their journeys. By tracking where these tiny travelers go, we can better protect the habitats they depend on throughout their lives.

🚧🚧Please be advised that there will be construction work happening on the access road to 70 Mile Butte that will require a road closure. The work is expected to start September 28, but may start sooner, with a duration of 1 to 2 weeks.

⚠️This closure will affect access to the 70 Mile Butte and Eagle Butte trail heads. We will post updates when the work has started, and when the road is reopened.

Why was the pirate sad when his parrot left him? 🦜

It gave him the cold shoulder.

This black-tailed prairie dog may not be a parrot, but he is definitely giving cold shoulder vibes. Don’t take it personally, prairie dogs have sentries to keep an eye on things and send out alarm calls when a predator has been spotted, so they need to be extra vigilant.
