Kapwa in Practice: Supporting Filipino Community Healing After Collective Trauma

Facilitator: John Tolentino, BC Filipino Therapist Association (BCFTA)
The session will include a circle check-in and introductions, a quick history of events and collaboration of Little Mountain Neighbourhood House Society (LMNHS) and the BC Filipino Therapist Association (BCFTA), a psychoeducational teaching and learning about working with the Filipino community and then a moment of closing, questions and reflections. We will also share resources for mental health support.
John Tolentino (he/him/they/them) is a Registered Social Worker in private practice and a doctoral student in education, specializing in trauma-informed and culturally responsive care. He is the founder of the BC Filipino Therapist Association (BCFTA), a grassroots network of Filipino clinicians supporting community mental health across British Columbia.
Grounded in his lived experience as a Filipino migrant and q***r community member, John's work integrates complex trauma frameworks with Filipino cultural values such as kapwa (shared identity) and pakikiramdam (relational attunement). Following the April 26 tragedy, he has supported individuals, families, and community partners through counselling, consultation, and community-based programming.
His facilitation style is relational, accessible, and practical-bridging clinical knowledge with real-world application for frontline staff and community leaders. John is passionate about creating spaces of care, connection, and sustainability for those supporting others. johntolentino.com
