Kapwa in Practice: Supporting Filipino Community Healing After Collective Trauma

Date: June 10, 2026
Time: 10am-12pm
Location: Mt Pleasant Community Centre, 1 Kingsway, Vancouver - Multipurpose Room 3
Facilitator: John Tolentino, BC Filipino Therapist Association (BCFTA)

The session will include a circle check-in and introductions, a quick history of events and collaboration of Little Mountain Neighbourhood House Society (LMNHS) and the BC Filipino Therapist Association (BCFTA), a psychoeducational teaching and learning about working with the Filipino community and then a moment of closing, questions and reflections. We will also share resources for mental health support.

John Tolentino (he/him/they/them) is a Registered Social Worker in private practice and a doctoral student in education, specializing in trauma-informed and culturally responsive care. He is the founder of the BC Filipino Therapist Association (BCFTA), a grassroots network of Filipino clinicians supporting community mental health across British Columbia.

Grounded in his lived experience as a Filipino migrant and q***r community member, John's work integrates complex trauma frameworks with Filipino cultural values such as kapwa (shared identity) and pakikiramdam (relational attunement). Following the April 26 tragedy, he has supported individuals, families, and community partners through counselling, consultation, and community-based programming.

His facilitation style is relational, accessible, and practical-bridging clinical knowledge with real-world application for frontline staff and community leaders. John is passionate about creating spaces of care, connection, and sustainability for those supporting others. johntolentino.com

Moving and learning with community has no age! Our Older Adults programs are designed for those 55+ who are seeking ways to stay active and engaged through activities such as knitting, ukulele, line dancing, pole walking, and more! While some programs will remain at locations around the neighbourhood, we are excited to have a dedicated space for Older Adult programs at the front of the building, with ample sunlight and right beside our expansive patio.

Our Community department reflects our overarching mission as a neighbourhood house: to foster community connections and build long-lasting relationships of trust and respect. We are excited to have more space dedicated to Community programming β€” in particular an onsite community garden to grow food and a large multipurpose room to distribute that food.

We are very excited to have a commercial kitchen again! Our previous location at 3981 Main St had a newly installed commercial kitchen that we unfortunately lost to the fire in 2023, and our current office has limited kitchen capacity. The new space at 157 E 36th Ave will allow us to offer even more home-cooked meals for our program participants, staff, and volunteers, inviting new opportunities to share good company and good food.
