cated in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, our organization was launched in 2004 under the leadership of renowned environmental advocate and seasoned prosecutor Doug Chapman. FRK is a licensed member of Waterkeeper Alliance -- an international grassroots advocacy organization founded by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. -- and the only Waterkeeper organization in British Columbia. It is also one of nine such programs in Canada and one of nearly 200 worldwide. Working in unison with individuals, businesses, and community groups, FRK has become a community leader and key resource for people who have questions or pollution concerns about our waterways. FRK works with water-based communities to find effective solutions to local pollution problems. Overall, we work with a diverse population, from urban dwellers residing in Vancouver to suburban residents, to local fishermen and families who live and work in the communities of the Fraser Valley. As FRK continues to advocate for clean water and educate the public about the state of their waters, citizens are encouraged and inspired to reclaim their natural and civic heritage of the Fraser River. By stimulating this stronger connection and commitment by the public, FRK is working to re-establish the Fraser River and the salmon it sustains as the biological, economic, and cultural heart of this region.

It’s Valentine’s Day and the Fraser Riverkeeper community is out here writing poetry to a 1,375 km legend. 😍

Swipe for the love notes — the kind that smell like cedar, taste like cold air, and end with: protect the salmon, protect the river.

Because our love language is simple: protected habitat and clean water. (And yes, we’re absolutely judging anyone who treats the Fraser like a dumping ground.)

A rivershed moment.
A defining river.

What does the Fraser mean to you?

We’re back. And we’re thinking bigger than ever.

After a year of listening, travelling the watershed, and seeing the change firsthand, we’re stepping forward with a bold new vision for the Fraser River.

🌊 Protect 30% of the Fraser Watershed by 2030.
🪶 Strengthen Indigenous stewardship.
🐟 Champion salmon habitat from the Headwaters to the Salish Sea.

And leading this next chapter, in partnership with the Indigenous Stewardship Fund is Fraser Riverkeeper Fin Donnelly — who dedicated his life to this river long before many of us knew how urgently it needed us.

In 1995 and 2000, Fin swam the entire Fraser to wake up the province and the country.

Now he’s leading a once-in-a-generation effort to protect it.
And we need you with us.

💧 Donate today to help launch the Fraser River Challenge and power this bold new vision.

Every gift helps build a future where salmon, communities, and the river itself can thrive.

Our Story

Fraser Riverkeeper, an initiative of Swim Drink Fish, is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Fraser River and its watershed— and our encompassing mission is to ensure the right of all citizens to safely swim, drink, and fish in BC waters.

We believe the best way to ensure swimmable, drinkable, fishable water is to build a network of water guardians, people who are connected to their waters, connected to each other, and active in community life.

Swim Drink Fish is a registered Canadian charity established in 2001. We represent a movement of over 4 million people in communities where access to clean water is threatened. We teach water literacy, support grassroots efforts to combat beach closures, drinking water threats, and disappearing habitat. We also aim to ensure that everyone has access to clean water for swimming, drinking, and fishing.

Our flagship projects blend science, law, education, and storytelling with technology to empower millions to know and safeguard their waters. We work closely with other local Waterkeepers across Canada, including Fraser Riverkeeper in Vancouver, to implement a variety of programs to archive and share stories, data, and evidence collected by these communities.
