💙💜💚 For our thirty-eighth story in 50 Stories for 50 Years, we highlight Oficina Curumim’s (.curumim) journey with Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, where Brazilian families have come together for 13 years to preserve their language, celebrate their culture, and pass their heritage on to the next generation.

Through Portuguese-language learning, stories, music, arts, games, and cultural celebrations like Carnival, Oficina Curumim helps children embrace their Brazilian identity while growing up in Canada. The program also creates meaningful connections among parents, building a strong and united community. Their story celebrates the importance of cultural identity, belonging, and creating a welcoming space where diverse communities can share their traditions and thrive together. 💙💜💚

From carpentry and community projects to conversations about life’s challenges, Varouj has helped foster a safe space where connection grows naturally, loneliness is reduced, and men learn from one another. His story highlights the power of community, the importance of mental health and belonging, and how working together can keep us curious, connected, and young. 💙💜💚

💙💜💚 For our thirty-sixth story in 50 Stories for 50 Years, we recognize the meaningful partnership between Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House and ReUseTech BC (), creating greater access to technology and digital learning for newcomer families.

Through refurbished laptops and hands-on technology workshops, Spanish-speaking caregivers gained the tools and confidence to navigate school platforms, communicate with teachers, and stay connected to their children’s education. This partnership demonstrates how organizations can come together to remove barriers, strengthen belonging, and create meaningful opportunities for families to thrive. 💙💜💚

🥳 Get to know our volunteer of the month, Shanti!

What do I do in my role as a volunteer?
I volunteer with the friendly phone calls program, where I chat with a senior resident in Mt Pleasant once a week. I also help out with occasional MPNH events (e.g. the 50th anniversary celebration!)

When did you begin volunteering at MPNH?
April of 2026.

Why do you volunteer?
I mainly wanted to feel like I could make someone's day a little bit better. I really love living in Mt Pleasant, and I wanted to support the community I live in.

Can you share a story or instance where you felt you made an impact?
Volunteering at the MPNH Pride BBQ was very sweet because the kids (and adults) were delighted to have their faces painted, it felt really great to see that excitement!

Your favorite memory at MPNH?
The senior I call for the friendly phone calls program has lived in Vancouver her whole life and I find it fascinating to hear about how the city has changed in that time!
