We were delighted to have a full house for our business breakfast this morning where Consul General Cathy Geagan was our guest speaker at the final business breakfast before her posting in Vancouver comes to an end in August. The Consul General presented a round up on the many initiatives undertaken in her time in Vancouver including the expansion of our area of remit at the beginning of her posting, strengthening bilateral and trade relations and building the Irish community connections in Western Canada to name a few.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning to celebrate Consul General Geagan’s time in Vancouver. Our business breakfast series will take a short break for the summer months and we will return in September when we will welcome incoming Consul General Gerry Kelly as guest speaker, have a great summer.

On Poetry Day Ireland, we bring to you one of Ireland’s most well-known poems. Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire (“The Lament for Art O’Leary”) was written in the 1770s by Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill. She wrote this lament after her husband, Art O’Leary, was murdered by officers for refusing to sell his beloved horse to the local sheriff.

Ar Lá Filíochta Éireann, cuirimid ceann de na dánta is cáiliúla in Éirinn os bhur gcomhair. Scríobh Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire sna 1770idí.

Scríobh sí an caoineadh seo tar éis dá fear céile, Art Ó Laoghaire, a bheith maraithe ag oifigigh toisc nach raibh sé toilteanach a chapall a dhíol le sirriam áitiúil.

Consul General Cathy Geagan was delighted to host a delegation of Ambassadors and High Commissioners of EU Member States visiting British Columbia in the Consulate General of Ireland, Vancouver.

The delegation was led by Her Excellency, Geneviève Tuts, Ambassador of the EU to Canada and she was accompanied by the Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden. Their visit shows the growing depth of the relationship between the EU and western Canada, and the huge potential for trade and innovation collaboration in the Province being advanced by the EU diplomatic corps here.

Consul General Geagan provided introductory remarks on the impact of EU membership on Ireland and the importance of our upcoming Presidency in the current geopolitical climate. Mayor of Burnaby, Mike Hurley, welcomed the delegation to Metro Vancouver and outlined the many opportunities for connection between BC and the EU. Her Excellency Geneviève Tuts gave a rousing speech on EU values, impact, and the opportunities to advance trade with Canada under CETA 🇪🇺🤝🇨🇦.

It was a pleasure to host the delegation and to be joined by consular corps colleagues, government representatives and trade and education contacts. We look forward to continued engagement as Ireland prepares for our Presidency of the Council European Union from Canada Day, July 1st.

Last Friday, Consul General Geagan joined with Consul General Aleksandra Kucy of Poland, Consul General Raphael Dang of France, and Consul General Gabriel Rotaru of Romania for a panel discussion, EU Consular Perspectives from BC, at the ECSA Canada conference in the University of Victoria.

Presentations were followed by a wide-ranging discussion on the threats and opportunities EU and Canada face together; the value of EU membership to Member States and the world, and what it means to be part of an unprecedented peace project that has created the extraordinary EU Single Market of more than 450million consumers, and free movement of people and goods throughout 27 member states.

Earlier last week, Vancouver welcomed Web Summit, which was founded in Ireland in 2009. This year’s conference attracted over 20 thousand attendees, 1,197 start-ups, and 768 investors, many of whom were from EU Member States. Together with the Consuls General of France 🇫🇷, Poland 🇵🇱 , Netherlands 🇳🇱, Italy 🇮🇹, Portugal 🇵🇹, and Romania 🇷🇴, Consul General Geagan represented Ireland 🇮🇪 at a number of events and welcomed colleagues from the EU Delegation to Vancouver.

The Consulate General of Vancouver will welcome Her Excellency Geneviève Tuts, Ambassador of the European Union to Canada, accompanied by a delegation of EU Heads of Mission to Canada, during their visit to Vancouver this week.

Today, on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we mark the progress made on the rights of 2SLGBTQI+ people.

It is unacceptable that 2SLGBTQI+ people continue to face discrimination, harassment, and violence for being who they are.

Ireland will continue to call for further steps to realise the full equality of 2SLGBTQI+ persons at home and globally.

📚The Consulate book club returns on Thursday 25 June to discuss Donal Ryan’s ‘Heart, Be At Peace’, winner of the 2024 Irish Book of the Year.

In a small town in rural Ireland, the local people have weathered the storms of economic collapse and are looking towards the future. But a fresh menace is creeping around the lakeshore and the lanes of the town, and the peace of the community is about to be shattered in an unimaginable way.

Told in twenty-one voices, ‘Heart, Be At Peace’ is a heartfelt, lyrical novel that can be read independently, or as a companion to Donal Ryan’s multi-award-winning debut novel, ‘The Spinning Heart’.

Today we celebrate Europe Day. For more than 50 years, Ireland’s 🇮🇪 membership of the European Union has had an overwhelmingly positive impact across all dimensions of Irish society.

EU membership has been central to Ireland’s development and transformation into a modern, open and innovative economy.

Closer integration with our European partners has helped to make us all safer, stronger and more prosperous.

From July to December 2026, Ireland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union – a central leadership role at the heart of EU decision-making.

For six months, Ireland will guide negotiations, broker agreement between Member States, and help deliver EU laws and policies that affect the daily lives of more than 450 million people.

This morning, the Consulate team participated in the Darkness into Light walk at Burnaby Lake Regional Park. It was fantastic to see our community come together in support of su***de prevention and mental health awareness.

Consul General Geagan was honoured to give welcome remarks to the speakers, and to introduce Mayor of Burnaby Mike Hurley, who has been a great supporter of Darkness into Light. This was the 12th year of the Darkness into Light walk in the Metro Vancouver region, raising much needed funds for the Crisis Centre of BC, and it would not be possible without the amazing team at Darkness into Light Vancouver and the hardworking volunteers.
