Awareness begins with understanding.

As an organization dedicated to accessibility across British Columbia, CHHA-BC stands in solidarity with Deaf and hard of hearing advocates working toward a world free of communication barriers.

This Deaf Awareness Month, we're taking a closer look at common assumptions around hearing, communication, and language. When we challenge old stereotypes, we make room for real inclusion and respect.

Myth 1 : "Hearing loss is the same for everyone."
Fact: Hearing experiences vary wildly. Two people with identical audiograms may navigate communication in completely different ways.

Myth 2: "Sign language is just signed English."
Fact: Sign languages are distinct, complete languages with unique grammar, syntax, and regional variations across Canada and worldwide.

Myth 3: "Assistive technology 'fixes' hearing."
Fact: Hearing aids and implants are tools, not cures. They assist with sound processing, but communication preferences remain individual.

Myth 4: "Accessibility only helps a small group."
Fact: Features like captions, visual signage, and plain language design make communication clearer and better for everyone in society.

Following the deeply troubling closure of the Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre (IDHHC) after 35 years of service, CHHA-BC has issued an urgent letter to Premier David Eby. The loss of IDHHC leaves thousands of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing individuals without trusted, timely support. We are calling on the BC government to step in, address the immediate service gaps, and commit to stable, long-term funding for community accessibility.

What an incredible night!

The world premiere of HEARD was a sold-out success, and the energy in the Rio Theatre was electric. Filmmaker Brian Ceci’s quest for community and self-acceptance resonated with so many, and the post-film Q&A sparked such meaningful conversation.

Searching for community, Brian connects with four other people whose unique hearing experiences help him connect the dots and move forward with his own hearing.
