Today is International S*x Workers’ Rights Day ✨
This day began in 2001, when more than 25,000 s*x workers gathered in India for a festival. It was a powerful act of collective visibility, solidarity, and resistance. In 2002, organizations around the world were invited to join in commemorating March 3, and since then, s*x workers and allies have organized events to raise awareness about the human rights abuses s*x workers face.
Today is about autonomy, safety, and dignity. It is about demanding recognition of s*x work as work, freedom from criminalization, and legal protection from violence and abuse. It is about challenging stigma and the harmful conflation of s*x work with trafficking…a conflation that many frontline organizations have warned increases isolation and vulnerability rather than reducing harm.
Policies that govern s*x work must include s*x workers. Criminalization deepens stigma, limits access to health care and housing, and entrenches poverty. Decriminalization, grounded in a human rights framework, is widely recognized by s*x worker–led movements as the path toward safety and self-determination.
This day shines a spotlight on s*x worker activism, community, and strength. It calls on institutions to:
• stop police harassment and violence
• ensure safe and fair working conditions
• eliminate barriers to health care, housing, and other services
• end stigma and discrimination
• meaningfully address trafficking without harming s*x workers
• advance racial, gender, and economic justice

A graphic with a soft pink background features bold red text at the top that reads, “SEX WORKER RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS.” Below the text, a smiling person is shown in black and white, holding an open bright red umbrella above their head. The umbrella stands out in vivid color against the otherwise grayscale figure. The person appears joyful, looking slightly upward with one hand raised as if gesturing or speaking. The overall design uses the red umbrella as a focal point and symbol of s*x worker rights activism.
