Arts Gala is back! 🎨🎭🎶

VDSC’s final initiative of the year serves to showcase the talented artists within the district and award scholarships for three VSB secondary students!

THEME: “A Snapshot of Time”

This year’s Arts Gala theme seeks to compare and contrast the progress one’s art journey has taken from the past, present, to the future. For this year’s theme, artists can choose from one of two options to submit their work:
1. Submissions can recreate or re-emulate an old piece of work into a present day adaptation. Within the submission, applicants will be asked to submit 1.) a photo attached of the reference (eg. childhood drawing, piece of writing, dance costume) and 2.) the new piece, in order to appreciate the changes and inspiration that went into the project.
2. Submissions can be an insight into artists’ goals and wishes for the future, whether that be a year after this starting a post-secondary life, or a forty year prediction into a dream life path!

Important Dates:
Deadline for submission - June 17th at 3:30PM
Voting - June 20-21 (Voting will occur online via Microsoft Form)
Results - BY June 24

1st place: $300 Scholarship
2nd Place: $200 Scholarship
3rd Place: $100 Scholarship

All entries must align with the spirit of your school and the district student code of conduct and will be reviewed prior to being approved for the Arts Gala.

This year, one of the conversations that took place within our meetings was related to the inclusivity and accessibility of events. Through hearing what worked and what needed improvement at initiatives that have occurred at secondary schools in the district, we’ve compiled a list of 5 things we encourage student leaders to keep in mind when planning events. VDSC presents: Sister School Switch 2024!

The SSS gives VSB secondary students in grades 10, 11, and 12 the opportunity to immerse themselves in a different school environment during the 4 day long event! Students will be randomly paired with others across the district, and will connect at the VSB Ed Center on the 15th of April for our orientation before the switch on the 16th and 17th, ending with a forum on the 18th. More details will be listed within the SSS application.

CANley Cup has concluded! Introducing our top three schools of the year🥫🏆

VDSC wants to extend a thank you to every person that donated towards the event. We treasure CANley so much, and have been endlessly grateful for all the events and initiatives we saw our VSB schools putting towards the cause. Have an amazing Winter Break, you all deserve it!

THE CANLEY CUP IS HERE!
November 27th-December 13th

The CANley Cup is a district-wide event that aims to raise non-perishable foods and money for the community through cans and monetary donations.

Schools are encouraged to hold friendly competitions with the neighbouring schools to promote donation. The school that collects the most cans will win the CANley Cup trophy. (Number of cans raised are scaled to school population, allowing a fair competition between large school populations and smaller ones).
