Association of Neighbourhood Houses BC The Association of Neighbourhood Houses of B.C. What is a Neighbourhood House?

(ANHBC) oversees eight neighbourhood houses and an outdoor centre, through which we operate more than 300 community-based programs and services for a diversity of participants. A warm and friendly place where people of all ages and nationalities come together to meet the needs of their neighbourhood and play an active role in civil society in order to make their communities better places to live healthy, full lives.

Food Security might mean being able to afford enough healthy and culturally appropriate food. It might mean knowing where to turn when you need support—or having opportunities to grow food, learn new skills, share a meal and help shape a better food system in your community.

As Vancouver prepares for the 2026 municipal election, neighbourhood houses across the city are inviting residents to share what matters most to them.

Neighbourhood houses see food security from many angles. Food hubs and food distribution respond to immediate need, but our work doesn't end with handing someone a bag of groceries. We strive to create welcoming, dignified spaces where people are known by name, relationships grow and community care surrounds the food.

We also host community meals and kitchens, cooking and food-skills workshops, gardens and food-sharing initiatives. And through Neighbourhood Food Networks, food justice coalitions and other partnerships, neighbourhood houses help bring community experience into advocacy and conversations about longer-term systems change.

The City is an important partner in this work. Vancouver's Food Strategy sets out a vision for a just and sustainable food system, supported through the City's Food Policy work, planning and community partnerships. The Vancouver Food Policy Council advises Council and staff on food-system policies, while Sustainable Food Systems Grants invest directly in neighbourhood-scale food initiatives, coalition-building, food access, skills and community capacity.

And that investment matters. The City itself recognizes that effective community food systems are shaped by the people who live in them. Sustained and growing investment in the neighbourhood food infrastructure and community partners helps us respond to today's needs while building the relationships, skills, leadership and collective capacity needed for longer-term change.

Seniors & Aging Well: What does this mean to you?

Aging well might mean being able to stay in the neighbourhood you know and love. It might mean having accessible places to go, people who know your name, support when you need it—and opportunities to keep learning, volunteering, sharing your knowledge and contributing to your community.

And this matters more than ever. People 65+ make up 17% of Vancouver's population, and this age group is growing five times faster than the population under 65.

As Vancouver prepares for the 2026 municipal election, neighbourhood houses across the city are inviting residents to share what they need to thrive in their communities—including as they age.

Neighbourhood houses help older adults stay connected and engaged through social groups, meals, recreation and learning, volunteering and leadership opportunities, intergenerational programs, information and referrals, and supports that help people remain connected to their communities.

Importantly, aging well isn't only about receiving support. It's about continuing to belong and contribute. Older adults bring tremendous knowledge, skills, relationships and leadership to our neighbourhoods.

The City's Older Persons Strategic Framework shares this vision. It aims for older Vancouverites to be engaged and included, connected and informed, able to age in the right place, get around with dignity, access spaces that meet their needs, and benefit from programs that support health and well-being. The framework also specifically recognizes social connection and meaningful volunteer opportunities.

Achieving that vision takes partnership. Continued City investment in accessible community spaces, age-friendly neighbourhoods, social connection, community programs and nonprofit partners can help make Vancouver a place where people don't simply grow older—they continue to participate, contribute and belong.

“The tree needs cozy sweaters. Like maybe all of us and our moms.”

When children were invited to explore what deeper connection to Land could mean, they decided their Gathering Tree needed a knitted sweater for winter—so they made one.

Children understand something adults often forget: care is mutual. We care for the Land, and the Land cares for us.

This reciprocity is at the heart of our Land Justice work and shapes how neighbourhood houses approach climate action—not only responding to climate impacts, but reducing harm and building stronger relationships with the Land. Learn more about Land Justice through the link in our bio.

We see climate impacts every day: extreme heat in homes without cooling, wildfire smoke keeping children indoors, and severe weather leaving isolated neighbours vulnerable. When that happens, people turn to the places and relationships they already trust.

Neighbourhood houses work alongside residents, volunteers, Indigenous partners and local organizations to strengthen climate resilience through emergency preparedness, cooling supports, wellness checks, food resilience and neighbour-to-neighbour connection.

The City’s Climate Emergency Action Plan and Climate Change Adaptation Strategy recognize that climate action requires collaboration across governments, organizations and communities. Investment in community partnerships and neighbourhood-based initiatives is essential.

As Vancouver prepares for the 2026 municipal election, we’re asking: How can we work together not only to respond to climate emergencies, but build proactive, long-term solutions rooted in reciprocity and relationship with the Land?

Belonging & Social Connection: What does this mean to you?

It could mean knowing your neighbours, feeling welcomed in your community, volunteering, joining a local event, or simply having a place where you feel seen, valued, and connected.

Healthy communities do not happen by accident - they grow through investing in everyday opportunities to connect and belong. When people know and trust one another, neighbourhoods become healthier, safer, more resilient, and better able to support one another through challenges and times of crisis.

As Vancouver prepares for the 2026 municipal election, neighbourhood houses across the city are inviting residents to share the issues that matter most to them. Throughout the summer, we'll bring community voices together and share what we hear directly with mayoral and council candidates this fall.

Neighbourhood houses have always been about more than programs—they're places where relationships grow, neighbours become friends, and communities thrive. Across the ANHBC network, we offer 476+ community programs and services that reduce social isolation, foster belonging, and create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect.

Belonging grows when people have opportunities not only to receive support, but also to participate and contribute. Last year, 3,135 volunteers contributed more than 85,900 hours, sharing their time, skills and lived experience to help create welcoming, connected communities.

The City also has an important role to play. Through investments in parks, libraries, public spaces, community amenities, and partnerships with nonprofit organizations, Vancouver can help create neighbourhoods where people feel connected, supported, and able to participate in community life.

It could mean finding affordable child care close to home, meeting other parents through a family drop-in, accessing parenting support, or simply having welcoming places where children and families can learn, play, and belong.

As Vancouver prepares for the 2026 municipal election, neighbourhood houses across the city are inviting residents to share the issues that matter most to them. Throughout the summer, we'll bring community voices together and share what we hear directly with mayoral and council candidates this fall.

Neighbourhood houses help make communities more family-friendly through licensed child care, family programs, early learning opportunities, parenting support, and community connections. Across the ANHBC network, we provide 2600 licensed child care spaces and offer 30+ types of family and early years programs, creating spaces where children thrive and families build lasting relationships.

The City also plays an important role. Through planning, community amenities, partnerships with nonprofit organizations, and investments in welcoming public spaces, Vancouver can help create neighbourhoods where families have the support they need to thrive close to home.
