May Newly Certified Employers!

This month, we certified 5 new employers across BC. Direct employees, and contracted workers will now not need to worry about how they will pay rent and food for their families because their employer has guaranteed to pay them a Living Wage.

This month we have certified Living Wage Employers in different sectors and communities. From local businesses like Kelowna Brow & Co in Kelowna, to organizations in the arts and culture industry like the Vancouver Out on Screen Film & Video Society.

We are pleased to acknowledge that these employers have committed to paying their employees a Living Wage. This initiative will significantly benefit workers earning lower wages.

Today, June 1, BC’s minimum wage is increasing from $17.85 to $18.25/hour. This increase is welcome for low wage wprkers across BC, but still falls short of a living wage. For many workers, wages still don’t cover the basic cost of living.

The gap between the minimum wage and a living wage continues to grow, a staggering $9.60 difference—driven by rising costs like rent and food.

Our latest report in partnership with BC Policy Solutions: Not Making Enough to Live shows that a growing gap between wages and the cost-of-living leaves one third (34%) of British Columbians earning less than the living wage in their communities.

While Living Wage employers are helping lead the way, more action is needed to ensure everyone can thrive. Coordinated action from all levels of government is needed to raise wages and lower cost pressures so that all workers can thrive.

Salish Soils is a Living Wage Employer!🎉

Salish Soils has just become a certified Living Wage Employer - committing to pay their staff and contracted workers a living wage.

Salish Soils is an Indigenous-led, Sechelt-based company that operates a 10-acre facility, transforming over 20,000 tonnes of organic waste (food scraps, wood, and biosolids) into high-quality compost, soil, and mulch. We operate a circular economy model, offering recycling, waste disposal, and soil delivery services to the Sunshine Coast.

“At Salish Soils, sustainability isn’t just about the land, it’s about people too. Committing to a living wage means supporting the hard working team members who power our circular economy and strengthening the communities where we operate.”

As the cost of living has increased across BC, the importance of paying a living wage has never been more important. The living wage is the hourly amount someone needs to earn to pay for basic essentials like food and rent, it doesn’t include paying off debt or saving for retirement. The Living Wage for the Sunshine Coast is $26.65 an hour.

“We’re delighted that Salish Soils has become a Living Wage Employer. We hope it encourages other employers to join the Living Wage movement. Paying a living wage is good for workers, employers and the local community.” said Living Wage BC.

Certifying as a Living Wage Employer is a voluntary commitment employers make to invest in their communities and local economies. There are now over 500 Living Wage Employers across BC.

Employer Spotlight Series! 🔆

In this series, we are spotlighting our Living Wage Employers, the work that they do, and how paying a living wage is making a difference in their organization.

“Since becoming a Living Wage Employer, we’ve seen tangible, positive changes. We haven’t had any staff leave (no small feat in the nonprofit world), and our team reports a healthy work–life balance. No one needs to take on additional jobs just to make ends meet, which means staff can show up focused, energized, and engaged in their work.” Katie Lavoie, Executive Director, Greenways Land Trust

Greenways Land Trust is an environmental nonprofit based in Campbell River, on Vancouver Island. Our mission is to care for the land and waters that sustain us, through education, stewardship, and conservation. They currently employ six year-round staff and three casual staff members, all working to support healthy ecosystems and resilient communities. Greenways Land Trust has been a certified Living Wage Employer since 2025.
