MEMBER MONDAYS featuring our first member, Thomas Machin!

Q. Hi Thomas, can you introduce yourself for us?
A. I’m in my fourth year of my music degree, here at UBC.

Q. How long have you been with EMAT?
A. I’m in my third year volunteering for EMAT.

Q. Why did you join EMAT and what’s your favourite thing about EMAT?
A. I initially joined EMAT to try to share a skill set that I had. I initially started learning about emergency medical services when I joined my local fire department’s Cadet team when I was in high school. From there, I got more and more excited about EMS and fire and eventually, got my Emergency Medical Responder certification up here in Canada. After I graduate, I should be going to work for an ambulance service down in Portland, Oregon.
My favourite part about EMAT is how you get to choose what kind of position you want to work in. You get to spread out and innovate in different ways you want to work in, make different changes, and see what works. You can make the position your own and I really enjoy that.

Q. It rains a lot in Vancouver. What do you do on a rainy Vancouver day?
A. Nice and drizzly warm days, I like to go on walks on the beach, Wreck beach, because then I get some exercise going back up those stairs. And on really rainy days, I like to just stay in my pajamas and read a book.

Q. If you could choose one, would it be love or money?
A. I’m definitely a romantic, so it has to be love.
