June is National Indigenous History Month.

A time to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Turtle Island.

It is also a time to reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonization and the inequities that continue to shape systems today.

At the Leadership Gathering earlier this year, we discussed these issues in detail with participants from across the health, housing, justice, and social sectors. Participants emphasized that current housing systems are not adequately meeting the needs of Indigenous communities and that lasting solutions must be grounded in Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and community connection.

At Connective, this means continuing to listen, learn, and better align our work with Indigenous-led approaches across housing and community supports.

As we enter this month, we recognize that certain topics can be difficult and may bring up experiences of trauma and loss. If you or someone you know needs support, resources are available, including culturally safe and trauma-informed services https://loom.ly/GIxjs-M

At this year’s Leadership Gathering, participants spoke about the challenges created by fragmented systems and the importance of stronger collaboration across sectors.

Housing, health, justice, and social services are often designed separately, even though people experience them together. When systems operate in silos, gaps emerge, coordination becomes harder, and people are too often left cycling through crisis.

These conversations reinforced the importance of continuing to work alongside partners, communities, and sectors to better understand how complex challenges intersect and how responses can better reflect those realities.

We’re proud to be assuming operations of a Complex Care Housing program in Kelowna, funded by Interior Health.

The program provides supportive housing for up to 20 adults, with 24/7 onsite staffing and individualized support for people navigating mental health, substance use, and other complex challenges. Together with Interior Health, we’ll be focused on creating a safe, stable, and supportive environment where people can feel connected to community and supported in their day-to-day lives.

This partnership reflects the growing need for more integrated, person-centred supports across the Interior Region. By working collaboratively, we can help strengthen continuity of care, respond to gaps in services, and better support people with complex needs in ways that are compassionate, respectful, and community-based.

As Connective continues to grow our presence in the Interior, we remain committed to building services that help people feel supported, valued, and connected.

At this year’s Leadership Gathering, one message was clear: solutions to complex challenges must be grounded in lived experience, Indigenous leadership, and community connection.

Participants spoke openly about the realities of navigating fragmented systems where accessing support can be difficult, outcomes are often uncertain, and services may not reflect the cultural needs and realities of those they are intended to serve.

Meaningful progress will require more than just statements of support. It requires the voices of those most affected to be actively involved in shaping solutions. That means moving away from systems designed for people and toward solutions built with them.

In practice, this looks like sustained action, long-term partnership, and meaningful investment in Indigenous-led approaches.

We’re excited to share that Connective’s first program in Victoria, Bridge Street Pathways Shelter, is now operational!

In partnership with BC Housing and the City of Victoria - Local Government, this 34-bed, referral-only shelter will support people experiencing homelessness in the community.

While this is Connective’s first program in Victoria, we bring more than 30 years of experience across Vancouver Island, including operating over 450 units of transitional, supportive, and affordable housing. Bridge Street Pathways builds on this experience through an innovative shelter model designed to support people transitioning toward stable housing, and is led by a Senior Manager with deep experience in shelter operations and the local community.

Bridge Street Pathways is not a drop-in shelter. Outreach teams will refer people sheltering outdoors who are ready to transition toward housing.

Residents will have access to daily meals, private washrooms and showers, laundry, personal storage, and dedicated spaces for support services. Our team will provide 24/7 onsite support, including case management, life skills development, and connections to health and community services.

We’re excited to share the 2026 Leadership Gathering Report!

This report captures key themes, insights, and recommendations, reflecting the collective momentum coming out of the Gathering as we continue working to improve housing responses for people facing complex needs.

The theme of this year’s Gathering was, “Building Housing Solutions for People Facing Complex Needs,” and focused on the critical role housing plays in strengthening service systems across sectors and stages of care.

Over two days of open and candid discussions, participants surfaced shared challenges, explored diverse perspectives, and developed three priority, actionable recommendations.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

This year’s theme, Ignite Volunteerism, is all about sparking connection, strengthening communities, and recognizing the impact of acts of service.

At Connective, we see that impact every day through the time, care, and dedication our volunteers bring. Our volunteers are a vital part of our work, supporting individuals through housing, employment, and life challenges, and contributing to restorative justice initiatives that promote safety and healing. Their involvement helps reconnect people to support, opportunity, and each other in meaningful ways.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who shares their time and energy with us. Your commitment helps build stronger, more connected, and more inclusive communities.

If you are interested in getting involved, visit the link to learn more https://loom.ly/3nezSKc. Please note that opportunities are limited and based on current needs.

To all of our volunteers, thank you for the impact you make every day.

As Dad HERO wraps up, we’ve been reflecting on what this program meant for the men who took part.

Delivered at Miyáqˈelhá:wetawt, our Indigenous focused Community Based Residential Facility, the program created space for men to reconnect with what it means to show up as fathers, role models, and community members. With guidance from an Indigenous Elder, participants engaged in conversations that were practical, honest, and rooted in lived experience.

Dad HERO focuses on strengthening communication and building healthy co-parenting relationships. Many participants are working to rebuild or strengthen relationships with their children and families, and this program gave them tools to move forward in a meaningful way.

Today marks ten years since the overdose crisis was declared a public health emergency in BC.

Ten years in, the urgency has not changed. This crisis continues to impact people, families, and communities across the province, and too many are still facing barriers to care, safety, and support.

We see this impact every day. Service users, staff, and communities continue to experience loss, grief, and the ongoing weight of this crisis.

At Connective, harm reduction guides how we respond. It means meeting people where they are, without judgment, and recognizing that safety, dignity, and choice matter at every stage.

This approach is put into practice through housing and wraparound supports. Safe and stable housing provides a foundation, while coordinated supports ensure people have access to the care, connection, and services they need to move forward in ways that are meaningful to them.

We continue this work in memory of those we have lost, and in solidarity with those navigating this crisis every day.
