Drumroll please for our final UBC BCYL Executive spotlight list… Nicholas!

Nicholas is a second year from Richmond majoring in Political Science aiming to minor in Economics.

Although Nicholas became interested in provincial politics in high school, he never knew how to get a foot in the door. After being introduced to the club by Co-Presidents Alex and Sam in early 2020, Nicholas jumped at the opportunity to serve as VP Membership and help other youths get their foot in the door. Through his connections with the club, Nicholas joined David Grewal’s campaign for Vancouver Fraserview MLA during the 2020 BC Election.

In addition to volunteering for local campaign initiatives and canvassing for candidates out of district, Nicholas also served as a Campaign Executive during the last Federal election.

Politics aside, Nicholas is an avid golfer, biker, and hockey player. Being a former Team BC Ball Hockey MVP and PCHA Bursary Award recipient has taught him the value of teamwork and importance of physical activity. He is also a HUGE Toronto Maple Leafs fan and doesn’t care who knows it!

Next up in the UBC BCYL spotlight: Insoo!

Insoo is a fifth year student majoring in Political Science and minoring in Commerce.

During his earlier years in South Korea, Insoo worked for the Democratic Party of Korea and was involved in their music education volunteer programs.

His initial involvement in provincial politics came recently in the 2020 BC Election where he worked as the Volunteer Chair for MLA Andrew Wilkinson’s home riding in Vancouver Quilchena.

Insoo's experience while serving as the UBC Hong Kong Students’ Association Socials Director bolstered his event-planning abilities and lent him the skills to tackle hosting engaging virtual events during COVID-19 as VP Events.

In terms of hobbies, Insoo enjoys playing instruments. He has spent multiple years studying at the Vancouver Academy of Music and played for the VAM Symphony Orchestra as a cellist.

Next up on our UBC BCYL Executive spotlight list: Andre!

Andre is a second-year Political Science major and a recipient of the Trek Excellence Scholarship and the Tuum Est Experiential Award.
He first got involved with the BC Liberals in 2019, volunteering at several of MLA Michael Lee's community events. He later interned at Michael Lee's Constituency Office and currently serves on the executive of the Vancouver-Langara Riding Association. Andre has also served as an Information Officer for Elections Canada during the 2019 Federal Election.
Andre has been with the UBC BCYL Executive Team since late-2019, and his experience combined with his administerial expertise has helped him work with Co-Presidents Alex and Sam with internal club organization as VP Operations.
Aside from politics, Andre enjoys playing tennis and skiing. He has played in several youth tennis tournaments over the past few years.

Since we have launched a new Instagram account (give us a follow !), we thought we would reintroduce the UBC BCYL Executive Team.

First up: our Co-Presidents, Alex and Samantha!

Alex and Sam are both fifth-years majoring in Political Science, with Alex minoring in Asian Studies and Sam minoring in History.

Alex and Sam have had pretty similar trajectories in their political careers. They first got involved with the BC Liberals in 2017 on Andrew Wilkinson’s leadership campaign, which led them to run for the provincial BCYL Executive in 2018. They have since both served on the BCYL Executive twice – Alex is currently the BCYL VP Outreach and Sam is the BCYL VP Operations.

After interning with the BC Liberal Party Headquarters in 2019, Alex and Sam continued to work at HQ in Operations. Sam has also worked as Mike Morris’ constituency assistant and Alex has served as a Chair for the BCLP Opportunity Summit.

During the 2020 BC Provincial Election, Alex served as a Youth Campaign Chair for the BCLP Campaign Advisory Council, while Sam was the Leader’s Tour Team Digital Lead. Currently, Alex and Sam work together as Andrew Wilkinson’s constituency assistants.

Aside from politics, Alex enjoys performance arts. She has performed in two musical theatre productions and guest conducts with the Vancouver Youth Symphony.
Sam is a big soccer fan and a regional referee. She has refereed 3 provincial championships, as well as the CCAA 2018 National Championships.
