World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is an important opportunity for us to come together as a community to raise awareness about elder abuse and neglect, promote dignity and respect for older adults, and strengthen community connection and support for seniors.

This year, the Chinese CRN is pleased to collaborate with the Renfrew Collingwood CRN to co-host a community WEAAD event bringing together seniors, community partners, and residents in a spirit of compassion, belonging, and hope.

“Roots to Rhythm Strawberry Social – Celebrating Stories of Compassion, Belonging, and Hope”

Date: Monday, June 15, 2026
Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Venue: Collingwood Neighbourhood House Gym, 5288 Joyce Street, Vancouver

This community gathering will include performances, artistic creation, community resources, refreshments, and opportunities for seniors and community members to connect in a welcoming and supportive environment.

As capacity is limited, we kindly encourage partners to register your clients, staff, and volunteers early using the QR code or digital registration form on the flyer.

SATURDAY SPOTLIGHT

This week’s Saturday Spotlight features Eva Aboud, Community Outreach Coordinator at . Drawing on both personal and professional experience, Eva reflects on how our understanding of food security has evolved, from emergency food support to a broader focus on dignity, connection, and self-sufficiency.

SNEAK PEEK

VFR: At Frog Hollow, your work goes far beyond food distribution. It’s about building community, confidence, and connection. Please share more about this.

🌿 Eva Aboud: At Frog Hollow, our work does go far beyond food distribution; it’s about building community, confidence, and connection. When families request food and seek me out, I strive to give them my full attention, making them feel welcome by offering a glass of water or a cup of coffee.

🌿I sit down with them to learn a little about what’s going on in their lives. This approach helps them feel seen and heard, which in turn enables me to provide them with additional resources that we may offer through the neighbourhood house.

🌿 Whether it’s a leadership program, financial literacy program, food skills training, or even an opportunity to volunteer, I want to connect them with options that suit their needs.

🌿 Sometimes families apologize for seeking me out and asking for food, and I always remind them never to say they’re sorry. I want them to feel proud of being resourceful and recognizing that they found me.

🌿 Everyone has the right to food, and I am here to help in whatever way I can, so they walk away feeling empowered, hopeful, and connected.

Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House is proud to support Right To Food and their call for action on food insecurity in Canada.

Today, nearly 10 million people—one in four—live in households that struggle to afford food. This includes workers, families with children, seniors, and people with disabilities

Right To Food’s 2026 pre-budget submission outlines practical, evidence-based solutions, shaped by input from more than 150 community organizations and Indigenous partners.

Key recommendations include:
• Setting national targets to cut food insecurity in half by 2030
• Strengthening and making permanent the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit
• Expanding the Canada Disability Benefit to lift people out of poverty
• Fund Indigenous food sovereignty through sustained, community-led investment
These are actionable steps that can make a real difference.
