North Star of Herschel Island has just celebrated 76 years since being built in San Francisco for two Inuit fur trappers, Fred Carpenter and Jim Wolki. The ship was used for transporting fur from Banks Island, NT. to market in Herschel Island, Tuktoyaktuk or Aklavik for over thirty years when barges and planes took over the routes. North Star was a key player in establishing Canadian Arctic Sovere

ignty at the head of the NW Passage during the Cold War and later, under her second owner, was used for surveying the controversial B.C./Alaska Boundary; working in the oil industry; sail-training for Inuit, and searching for mermaids off of the Aleutian Islands. Under our watch she has been the Official Canadian Ambassador during International Tall Ship Festivals; voyaged thousands of miles on the B.C//Washington coasts and has been our home for the last sixteen years. A book about her history has been written and publishing details are imminent.
