Ever tried to talk to your child about screen time or online safety when they're already upset?

Sometimes the problem isn't that they're refusing to listen. They're not in a state where they can listen.

The Window of Tolerance describes the zone where we can think, feel, connect and have a productive conversation. When we're highly activated or completely shut down, meaningful conversation becomes much harder.

So before talking about rules or consequences, try to regulate first.

Things that can help include:
• A calm, predictable environment
• Enough sleep and food
• Movement or time outside
• Feeling heard and understood
• Breathing or mindfulness
• And when emotions are running high?

Pause. Regulate. Return.

The conversation isn't lost. It's just not ready yet.

For Child Abuse Prevention Month, Tapestry has been taking a deeper look at what children and teens are navigating in today's hyperconnected world.

Technology has changed how young people learn, communicate, socialize and build relationships. It may bring new opportunities, but it results in new challenges for children, teens and their parents.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing some practical ideas around communication, connection, boundaries and online safety, with the hope of supporting parents and caregivers as they navigate this new world alongside their children.

Keeping children safe starts with understanding the world they're growing up in.

If you'd like to talk to a counsellor about your family, we are here to help.

Imagine your child comes to you with something worrying that happened online. Your first reaction might be fear, anger or a rush of questions. That's understandable.

But taking a moment before reacting can make it easier for your child to keep talking.

Try to:
• Listen before lecturing.
• Ask questions before making assumptions.
• Stay curious rather than reacting with fear or judgement.
• Thank them for telling you.

Instead of:
“Why would you do that?”
Try:
“Can you tell me what happened?”
Instead of:
“That's so dangerous. You can't be trusted.”
Try:
“I'm worried about that. Can we figure out together how to keep you safe?”

You don't have to hide your concern. You can be worried and stay connected.

The goal isn't to get every conversation right. It's to help your child know that they can come to you, even when something has gone wrong.

Tapestry supports survivors of childhood abuse and trauma every day. This Child Abuse Prevention Month, we're sharing practical ideas to help parents and caregivers create safer, more connected relationships with their children and teens.

If you're finding communication with your child or teen difficult, we are here to help. Please contact us.

Tapestry was founded by two people who came to this work from a deeply personal place, with a shared commitment to supporting people affected by trauma and childhood abuse. Today, that commitment continues through a dedicated, compassionate and diverse team of counsellors who support people from across the East Vancouver community and beyond.

Tapestry works every day with adults who are living with the impact of childhood abuse. Their experiences are at the heart of why this work matters, and why prevention matters too.

As we mark Child Abuse Prevention Month, we also reflect on Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and the ongoing impact of residential schools on Indigenous children, families and communities.

Every child deserves to feel safe, heard and respected. And those who didn't have that experience deserve compassionate support and the opportunity to heal.

If you are living with the impact of childhood abuse, please reach out to us. You don’t have to go through this alone.

Wearing orange in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

A day to remember, reflect and honour Indigenous communities and the children who never came home.

We recognize that the impacts of residential schools and the harms of the past continue to be felt by Indigenous people, families and communities today.

Today and always, we take time to listen, learn, remember and reflect.

If you know that a particular date or time of year is difficult for you, it can help to prepare.

Small things can make a difference: reducing unnecessary pressure, sticking to simple routines, grounding yourself in the present and letting someone you trust know you may need some extra support.

Most importantly, try to approach yourself with curiosity rather than judgement.

Instead of asking, “Why am I like this?”, try asking:

“What do I need right now?”

Please don't feel you have to struggle in silence. We're here to listen and support you, or help point you in the right direction.

Have you ever noticed that you feel more anxious, restless or on edge at a particular time of year?

For people who have experienced trauma or abuse, certain dates, seasons or anniversaries can bring up difficult emotions and physical responses. Sometimes you know exactly why. Other times, you may simply feel different without understanding the reason.

You might feel more anxious, agitated, hyper-vigilant or emotionally overwhelmed.

This is sometimes known as an anniversary reaction. Your body and nervous system can respond to reminders of past experiences, even when you're not consciously thinking about what happened.

Back-to-school and back-to-work season can also bring changes in routine, pressure and memories connected to childhood.

If you notice a pattern, try asking yourself:

Could this time of year be affecting me?

Please don't feel you have to struggle in silence. If this brings up something you'd like to talk through, we're here to listen and support you, or help point you in the right direction.

Many people think improving their mental health requires dramatic changes.

But often, healing begins with something much smaller.

☕ A coffee with a friend.
🌳 A walk through the park.
🎵 Listening to live music at a festival.
🛍️ Supporting a local business.
👋 Saying hello to a neighbour.

These everyday moments help us slow down, reconnect with others and remember that we’re part of a community.

In our latest blog, we explore why connection plays such an important role in mental wellbeing and why East Vancouver is such a special place to experience it.

If you’re looking for a little inspiration this summer, we’d love you to have a read.

Thank you to everyone who helps make East Vancouver the vibrant, supportive community it is.

When we hear the word trauma, many of us think of a single, life-changing event.

But trauma can also develop through ongoing experiences, particularly during childhood.

Growing up with abuse, neglect, emotional invalidation, or an unpredictable home environment can shape the way we see ourselves, relate to others, and respond to stress well into adulthood.

Many people don't immediately connect struggles like anxiety, people-pleasing, perfectionism, low self-worth, or difficulties in relationships with experiences from earlier in life. Yet understanding those connections can be an important step towards healing.

At Tapestry Counselling Centre, supporting adults who are living with the effects of childhood trauma is an area of particular expertise.

Our latest blog explores some common misconceptions about counselling and how it can provide a safe, compassionate space to better understand yourself and move forward.
