Operation Plunder was the main Allied and Canadian push into Germany during the closing months of the .

On March 23, 1945, the First Canadian Army launched Operation Plunder, a series of attacks on the Rhine River, the last major German defensive line.

After days of difficult fighting, the Allies successfully secured the Rhine River vantage point. From there, they continued to advance through Germany, leading to the end of the war in May.

As His Majesty The King’s representative in Canada, and in accordance with her constitutional duties, signed the proclamations under the Great Seal of Canada to dissolve the 44th Parliament and call a general election.

The Great Seal, one of the oldest and most esteemed instruments of our government, signifies the power and authority of the Crown. Among its many functions, it plays a key role in the exercise of royal authority, including the power to dissolve Parliament, a responsibility carried out by the governor general.

The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion was a strong, highly-trained unit that was ready to jump into action—literally.

In late March 1945, they participated in Operation Varsity, the allied attacks across the Rhine River in Germany.

The Battalion’s goal?

Capture and hold a wooded area north of the river, to provide cover for their Allies as they crossed the river.

This airborne operation was challenging but Allies secured the Rhine River bridgehead in late March 1945.

“Canada is recognized internationally as a nation committed to diversity and inclusion. Yet, as we learn about our full national history, we know that this has not always been the case. While we have come a long way in combating prejudice in all its forms, unfortunately hate and discrimination continue to be a lived reality for many people in our country, both online and in everyday life.

This is why we must continue to unite against racism in our society. As Canadians, our strength lies in our diversity. By taking the time to listen and learn from one another, we forge new relationships and build bonds that give us the strength to overcome any challenge.

On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, I invite all Canadians to continue working towards a more inclusive, stronger society. Let us seize every opportunity to celebrate what we have in common, what we can learn from one another and what we can achieve when we work together.” -
