📢 What an impressive roster‼️ has confirmed that it will field a team to participate in the 58th International Children’s Games in , Taiwan. 17 outstanding youth athletes, accompanied by 4 coaches, will compete in four categories: 🏹 , 🏀 3-on-3 , 🥋 , and 🎾 .

Speaking with Kelowna Capital News, organizing committee president Lance Armstrong highlighted that the International Children’s Games is a competition recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Founded in 1934 by Slovenian instructor Metod Klemenc with the goal of bringing young people from different countries and cultural backgrounds together through sport, the competition overcomes barriers and fosters mutual understanding.

MacDonald then said that the International Children’s Games often serves as an important springboard for youth aspiring to reach the Olympics. One standout example is Kylie Masse, who represented her hometown of Windsor at the 2009 International Children’s Games before going on to win five Olympic medals, including bronze in the women’s 200-metre backstroke at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

For many members of the delegation, this will be their first trip abroad. MacDonald hopes every athlete will embrace the full experience that Taiwan has to offer, by trying new foods they have never tasted before and listen to different languages from athletes all over the world.

The 58th International Children’s Games will take place in Hualien from August 1st to August 6th. We look forward to welcoming Kelowna’s youth athletes to , and wish them an unforgettable time both on and off the field! 🥳🎊

🐠 Talk about a case of mistaken identity! For more than a century, the tiny found commonly in rice paddies and ponds of the Lanyang Plains were thought to be the Chinese rice fish. But after years of meticulous study, scientists have discovered that these little swimmers are actually an entirely different , one that is native to Taiwan!

A research team from the Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute, National Taiwan Ocean University, and National Chiayi University has officially announced a new freshwater fish species, the Kavalan Rice Fish (Oryzias cabaranensis) in the international zoological journal Zootaxa. This finding serves as an important milestone in understanding Taiwan’s rich by solving a mystery that has puzzled researchers for more than a hundred years.

For generations, schools of Kavalan Rice Fish thriving in fields across the Lanyang Plains were believed to be the Chinese Rice Fish (Oryzias sinensis). However, through extensive fieldwork and detailed comparisons with Chinese Rice Fish topotypes collected from Yunnan, China, researchers confirmed that the population in northern Taiwan is actually not Oryzias sinensis at all, but a distinct species that evolved independently. In other words, these tiny fish have been native residents of 🇹🇼 all along; they were simply misidentified for many, many years.

Holotypes of the new species were collected from Shuanglianpi Wetland, a well-known wetland in . To honour the site and its rich cultural heritage, the research team named the species after Yilan’s historic name, Cabaran (Kavalan), giving it the scientific name Oryzias cabaranensis and the common name Kavalan Rice Fish. Growing to only about 3 centimetres in length, the small and delicate fish has a semi-transparent pale and creamy yellow body, a row of black spots forming a stripe along its side, and striking light-blue eyes that give it an especially adorable appearance.

Researchers also found several key differences between the Kavalan Rice Fish and the Chinese Rice Fish. Male Kavalan Rice Fish lack the distinctive dorsal hump seen in male Chinese Rice Fish, have fewer vertebrae, and display different positioning of their dorsal and a**l fins. These distinctive anatomical characteristics hammer home the point that the fish is neither an introduced species nor part of a widespread population, but rather a truly unique species native to Taiwan! 🕵️✨

🕯️ The Sea is Great Because it Accepts All Rivers! 37 years ago, thousands of young idealists in the prime of their lives were brutally massacred and crushed by troops and tanks on the streets of Beijing, in Tiananmen Square, and across China.

What was destroyed that year was not only the lives and youth of those who took part in the pro-democracy movement. It was also an entire Chinese generation's aspirations and pursuit of freedom and democracy.

A truly great nation should not place its faith in military might or glorify the use of force. Rather, it should embrace diverse voices, protect its people's right to pursue their dreams, and have the courage to confront the wounds of its own history.

President Lai Ching-te sincerely hopes that China will face the truth about the June 4th Incident 37 years ago, acknowledge what happened and heal the wounds left behind through reconciliation and dialogue. He underscored that people should be free to express their views and urged that individuals representing different generations and perspectives be included in public decision-making. The voices of young people deserve to be heard in particular, because their vision for the future is what drives a nation forward.

When the truth remains sealed away, memory becomes a force against forgetting. Let us continue to stand firm. 🇹🇼 will stand alongside all those who seek and until the truth is recognized, the wounds are healed, and no one loses their life for pursuing freedom ever again. Because a nation that respects its people, safeguards freedom, and upholds democratic values is a nation truly worthy of respect. 🐳✨

⚛️ A big upgrade for Asymmetric Warfare! Leading military researchers in Taiwan unveil dog capable of patrols, reconnaissance, and target tracking!

As advances in , autonomous control and mechatronic integration continues at a rapid pace, the development of unmanned ground systems capable of carrying mission-specific payloads have become a priority for the global defence sector, and 🇹🇼 is no exception. This week, the country’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) demonstrated its latest defence robot dogs, which quickly drew attention across the country. Built on the US-licenced Ghost Robotics Vision 60 platform with innovations from Taiwan’s supply chains, these robot companions are designed for a variety of missions. During the demonstration, LiDAR-equipped, reconnaissance, and fire-support variants performed patrols, surveillance, autonomous obstacle avoidance, target tracking, and weapons-targeting exercises, highlighting the versatility of unmanned systems in modern defence operations.

While they don’t appear particularly large, these robot dogs are packed with impressive capabilities. The Vision 60 weighs approximately 52 kilograms, yet can still move at speeds exceeding 2.5 metres per second while carrying a 10-kilogram payload. Whether navigating rough terrain or operating in complex environments, the platform is designed to maintain mobility and stability. Initial testing shows that the robot dogs can operate continuously for 3 hours on a single charge. When used intermittently depending on mission requirements, endurance can be extended to between 8 and 10 hours. Future integration of solid-state battery technology is expected to further enhance operational endurance.

Outfitted with 3D LiDAR and thermal imaging sensors, the LiDAR-equipped robot dog impressed many observers at the demonstration with its ability to autonomously patrol, avoid obstacles, detect heat sources, and even generate three-dimensional maps of its surroundings. Not to be outdone, the reconnaissance variant conducted a target detection, identification, and tracking exercise, and transmitted real-time information back to command-and-control systems to improve situational awareness. Meanwhile, the most eye-catching fire-support model integrates an NCSIST-developed remote weapon station, along with visible-light cameras, thermal imaging sensors, and laser range-finding equipment. In addition to reconnaissance missions, it can provide precision fire support when required. Beyond military applications, these systems could also be deployed for coastal surveillance, airport security, infrastructure protection, and other specialized missions.

According to NCSIST, these robot dogs will play an important role in offshore island defence, coastal monitoring, and military base security operations. The institute is currently evaluating their potential inclusion in future military exercises, including Taiwan's Han Kuang exercises and urban resilience drills, as part of broader efforts to integrate unmanned systems into next-generation defence operations! 🐶💪

Earlier today, President Lai Ching-te awarded Czech Senate (Senát Parlamentu ČR) President Miloš Vystrčil the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon in recognition of his longstanding support for Taiwan, robust efforts to strengthen Taiwanese-Czech relations, and immense contributions in defence of the values of democracy and liberty.

During the occasion, President Lai noted that while geographically far apart, Taiwan and Czechia share a deep commitment to , , and ; and it is precisely because of these common values that the two nations have been brought closer together. Senate President Vystrčil has long championed Taiwan-Czech friendship, most notably in 2020 when, despite pressure from China and amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, he led a delegation to Taiwan and declared in the Legislative Yuan, “I am Taiwanese.” His courageous gesture inspired people across Taiwan and demonstrated to the world the power of democracy, solidarity, and Czechia’s proud tradition of defending freedom.

President Lai emphasized that the honour bestowed today represents more than recognition of Senate President Vystrčil’s personal contributions. It also reflects the shared values that unite Taiwan and Czechia; in recent years, the two countries have deepened cooperation in trade, technology, culture, and education, and achieved meaningful results together. As the world faces growing uncertainty and challenges, Taiwan and Czechia should continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder for freedom and democracy, safeguard these precious values and contribute to global peace, stability, and prosperity. There is every reason to believe that this friendship spanning thousands of kilometres, will continue to herald in new and inspiring chapters in the years ahead.

Apart from the official ceremonies, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim also invited Senate President Vystrčil and his delegation to Dadaocheng yesterday to experience Taiwan’s rich tea culture.

🏝️ Whenever is mentioned, images of past battles, tunnels, and coastal fortifications come to mind. But this offshore island has a surprisingly side as well!

With its big round eyes and fluffy appearance, the 🦦 Eurasian is one of Kinmen’s most iconic wild residents. These nocturnal animals are also exceptional swimmers, often darting gracefully through the water as they hunt for fish, shrimp, and crabs. For adventurers looking to spot one, Tai Lake is the best place to try your luck. Your best chance is usually between 7 to 9PM, because these shy creatures are experts at staying out of sight.

Known for being extremely discerning of water quality, Eurasian otters are regarded as Mother Nature’s very own environmental inspectors. Today, Kinmen’s Eurasian otter population number around 90 to 150, making them a rare and protected species. To help them flourish, the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency has been actively creating otter-friendly corridors, reducing threats from free-roaming dogs and cats, and strengthening rescue, medical care, and release programs under the National Ecological Network Initiative.

Otters aren’t the only stars of Kinmen’s wildlife. Another striking guest is the 🐥 Blue-tailed Bee-eater, dubbed affectionately by locals as the summer fairy. As they sweep across the island’s lush green fields, their bright cheerful calls serve as the perfect announcement for ’s imminent arrival. Sporting vibrant yellow-green feathers, bright blue tails, and chestnut coloured throats that shimmer brilliantly in the sunlight, Blue-tailed Bee-eaters are hard to miss. Their slender, slightly curved beaks makes them highly skilled insect-hunters.

Between May and August, thousands of these gather at pond embankments, gravel piles, former military trenches, and exposed sandy coastlines across the island to court, nest and raise their young. As flocks of these beautiful birds soar through Kinmen’s blue skies, they serve as a breathtaking reminder that beyond its fascinating history, Kinmen is a lush paradise home to some of ’s most remarkable ! 🤗✨

🗳️ Numbers Don’t Lie! Taiwanese public opinion rejects “One Country, Two Systems” and sends a clear message: freedom and democracy are not bargaining chips.

As Cross-Strait issues remain in the spotlight following the Trump-Xi Summit, a new poll conducted by 🇹🇼 ’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) found that most oppose “One Country, Two Systems” and “peaceful unification.” The vast majority of people support our government’s move to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait by strengthening national defence.

The numbers are strikingly clear and consistent. 79.7% of respondents do not support “One Country, Two Systems, while 87.1% say they would not accept either “One Country, Two Systems” or “peaceful unification” if it meant sacrificing freedom and democracy. In addition, 82.2% disapproved of Beijing’s attempts to obstruct the Taiwanese President’s overseas visits to diplomatic allies, and believed that such actions undermined peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

In a presser this week, MAC Deputy Minister Liang Wen-chieh said the poll also reflected that the mainstream public opinion in Taiwan support the status quo. 72.6% of participants agreed that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other. 88% believed that Taiwan’s future should be determined collectively by its 23 million people, and 85.6% support maintaining the current state of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Support for self-defence remains strong as well. Nearly 72% back increasing defence expenditures to bolster Taiwan’s ability to protect itself amid growing pressure from the PRC.

In response to Beijing's continued efforts to intensify pressure on Taiwan and compel the Taiwanese people to accept unification, the Government will not waver from its Four Commitments. The Government will continue to implement the Four Pillars of Peace Action Plan and the National Security Action Plan to Safeguard a Democratic Taiwan. These initiatives will strengthen Taiwan’s whole-of-society resilience, reinforce democratic defence mechanisms, and safeguard the country’s sovereignty, security, and overall national interests. The Government calls on authorities in Beijing to face the reality that the Republic of China exists, and respect mainstream public opinion in Taiwan. Beijing must abandon its coercive actions and engage in dialogue with Taiwan's democratically-elected government without preconditions, in the interest of long-term peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. 🐳✨

📣 Maintaining in the Taiwan Strait is an international ‼️ Yesterday, 🇯🇵 Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Senae and 🇵🇭 Philippine President Bongbong Marcos issued a joint statement at their bilateral summit, which emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and encouraged the peaceful resolution of Cross-Strait differences through dialogue. This is the first time that Japanese and Philippine leaders have jointly expressed concern over developments in the Taiwan Strait though an official statement, reflecting that peace and stability in the Strait is now a shared interest of the international community. Our Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung welcomes and appreciates the two leaders for their principled stance on the Taiwan Strait.

In the joint statement, both leaders also expressed serious concerns over the situation in the East China and South China Seas, and strongly opposed any unilateral attempts to change the status quo through force or coercion. As maritime countries that share democratic values, and the will elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and strengthen cooperation in a multitude of fields, including security, maritime affairs, economic development, critical minerals, and supply chain resilience.

At the same time, 🇨🇦 ’s Department of National Defence officially confirmed that its frigate HMCS Charlottetown has transited the Taiwan Strait in a northward direction on May 23rd, with Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty reiterating that the Taiwan Strait is international waters. Hours after the news broke, Former Canadian Defence Minister and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, along with Vice President Vina Nadjibulla of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, have voiced support for the vessel’s passage through the Taiwan Strait in accordance with international norms.

This is the 13th time that the Canadian government has dispatched a naval vessel through the Taiwan Strait since 2018 as part of its commitment to advance resilience, peace, and freedom throughout the Indo-Pacific region. We welcome and appreciate Canada for taking concrete and consistent measures to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

Freedom of navigation on the high seas is a right enshrined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Our country respects lawful activities by foreign vessels in the Taiwan Strait. As China intensifies its military presence near Taiwan and attempts to undermine the Taiwan Strait’s status as an international waterway, 🇹🇼 will continue to bolster its self-defence capabilities and stand firm against authoritarian expansionism. We will continue to work closely with all like-minded partners to build a , and Indo-Pacific region. 😊👍

⚠️ Unmasking Chinese militarism‼️ China has been rapidly expanding its land reclamation projects in the Paracel Islands, and one location in particular is raising eyebrows among defence experts: Antelope Reef. In just five months, the reef’s reclaimed area has expanded to 1,490 acres, making it one of the largest artificial islands in the South China Sea. According to Taiwan’s Institute for National Defense and Security Research, this latest push is part of Beijing’s purported “active defence” strategy of linking scattered outposts into a cohesive defence network encompassing the sea, underwater domains, and airspace, giving China even tighter control over the region.

Based on defensive layouts and deployment patterns seen so far, Beijing does not expect Antelope Reef and other artificial islands in the area to survive long in a major war. Rather, they are designed to serve as sacrificial pawns during the opening salvos of a conflict. If an adversary chooses to strike these outposts, their radar signatures, electronic spectrum characteristics, tactical methods, and firing positions would be exposed, effectively falling into what a**lysts describe as a pre-arranged spectrum trap. Even before it’s destroyed, Antelope Reef could still function as a forward sensor within China’s anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) system, consolidating and processing radar feeds, underwater sensor array data, and unmanned vehicle intelligence from surrounding outposts to help the PLA gain early battlefield awareness.

Analysts expect Antelope Reef will likely be outfitted under the dual-use development model observed across the PLA’s South China Sea outposts. During peacetime, facilities on the reef may be presented as research stations, administrative centres, coast guard hubs, or maritime militia support bases in order to mask their military functions and reduce international criticism. But if a crisis unfolds, these same facilities could be swiftly transformed into forward bases for electronic warfare, maritime and aerial surveillance, and operations designed to slow or block enemy advances. If China launches an invasion against Taiwan, the greatest strategic value of Antelope Reef and other South China Sea outposts would likely be their ability to tie down the United States and allied forces, delaying efforts to reinforce Taiwan’s defences and buying the PLA a critical 48 to 72 hour window for amphibious operations targeting the island country.

This latest buildup shows that China completely disregards calls for regional peace and stability. In face of Beijing’s military expansionism, the government will continue to uphold the Four Commitments. We will calmly and resolutely defend Taiwan’s sovereignty, democracy, liberty and rule of law. The right of 🇹🇼 ’s 23 million people to determine their own future cannot and will not be trampled on. 🐳✨
