Good morning everyone.
As many of you may be aware of the semi tractor trailer fire that occurred yesterday on Hwy 16 and Sunnyslope Rd, I thought I would enlighten you as to our response. We were paged at about 1330hrs (1:30pm) for a vehicle fire on the hwy. While initially tight with available members, we managed to respond with both, our Engine 11 and Tender 12 to the scene with 5 members. The tractor trailer was hauling wood pellets for pellet stoves, headed west bound when the fire started. At this time, we are not fully apprised as to the cause of the fire. The crew on scene, very quickly deployed hose and managed to put out the immediate threat of fire and prevent it from spreading into the dry grass. Unfortunately, due to the load of wood pellets, it proved very difficult to completely extinguish this smoldering product for quite some time. By 1530hrs (3:30pm) we had several other members able to join the crew on scene to give assistance.
If you had driven by, you may have noticed the large yellow square porta-tank on the highway that we were using to store water for the engine while we were conducting water shuttle operations. We also had our Tender 11 join in this effort. In total we consumed approximately 9000 gallons of water to completely extinguish the fire.
I would like to thank the RCMP and a short time later Viking Traffic Control, for providing traffic control for us while we worked. Their professionalism, cooperation and quick response are much appreciated. Also, a shout out to YRB, for bringing in some heavy equipment to assist with what we call over-haul and then clean up on the highway.
In total we spent 7 hours on this call including a good hour and a half back at the hall cleaning all of our equipment and getting the trucks ready and back in service as quick as possible.
I want to thank all of our crew members who responded to this event both on scene and later joining us at the hall just to help clean up after their own workday was done. In total, 13 members participated in this response.

Fire pagers went off about 1500. Our department responded to and searched for a wildfire, finally locating with help from local residents and BC Wildfire helicopter.

Our crew arrived on scene and in order to get to the fire ran 750 feet of hose from the truck to the fire as our engine and tender were unable to make it up the road closer to the fire. Once set up our crew spent 4 hours on scene. BC Wildfire responded but was soon redeployed to a second flare up in the area. At our request for mutual aid a crew from Vanderhoof fire department responded.

Once the fire was confirmed out and the burned area was tossed and soaked thourgouhly our crew returned to the hall.

Upon return to the hall members spent an additional hour and half cleaning gear and refitting the units in preparation for the next call.

Many of our members today responded from home, from their work, or delayed going to work to be able to fight this fire that could have spread drastically. For that we thank each member who responded today.

All crew returned safely to the hall following response to a wildfire at 1500. Thanks to local residents for calling it and helping us to locate the fire. Thanks to BC Wildfire and mutual aid response from Vanderhoof.
