The Higginson Observation Tower represents the many positive contributions to Vankleek Hill made by Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Higginson (1794 -1884), an emigrant from County Antrim, Ireland, who left Ireland in 1819 and settled in Vankleek Hill in 1829. The Higginson Observation Tower was constructed by Higginson as a windmill in c. 1830 for grinding wheat and corn to further the commercial development of Vankleek Hill and the immediate district. When this project failed due to lack of consistent wind power, Higginson, (commissioned lieutenant in the Prescott Regiment on April 23, 1839) transformed the mill into the first private observatory in Eastern Ontario.

La Tour d'observation Higginson illustre les nombreuses contributions du lieutenant-colonel Thomas Higginson, un Irlandais natif du comtĂ© d’Antrim qui Ă©migra au Canada en 1819 et qui s’installa Ă  Vankleek Hill en 1829. Thomas Higginson (1794-1884), la Tour d'observation Higginson servait de moulin Ă  vent pour moudre le blĂ© et le maĂŻs tout en amĂ©liorant le dĂ©veloppement commercial de la rĂ©gion immĂ©diate de Vankleek Hill. Suite Ă  l’échec de ce projet en raison de l’insuffisance du vent, l’on attribue Ă  Monsieur Thomas Higginson, (nommĂ© lieutenant au rĂ©giment de Prescott le 23 avril 1839) la transformation de ce moulin Ă  vent en premier observatoire privĂ© de l’Est l'Ontarien.

Sharing just a few beauties with you!

Labelling hats this evening for the 100 Winter Hats for the Higginson Tower event taking place during The 2026 Vankleek Hill Christmas Home Tour on Saturday, November 7. All winter hats will be on sale at The Review at 76 Main Street East beginning at 9 am on tour day!

All proceeds will go to the Higgjnson Tower!

Thanks to local knitters, we are at 43 hats as of today!!!

If you would like to sew, knit, crochet or create a winter hat, please bring your creations to The Review and we will label them in time for tour day! Be sure to attach a note indicating what your hat is made of (acrylic, wool, angora etc) and your first name :)

NOTE: The Higginson Tower will be open for THREE DAYS this coming weekend: we will be open SATURDAY, SUNDAY & MONDAY from 10 am to 4 pm! Admission to the tower is free, but donations are always appreciated!

It will be a hive of artistic activity on Sunday, September 6 when Art In The Garden/ Art dans la jardin will bring the tower grounds to life! A true feast for the eyes!

In the meantime, over on Main Street, the Excellent Events Festival of Flavours will be happening on Sunday, September 6, 2026!

Unfortunately, the Broken Kettle is not open today, they open on Tuesday at 10AM. However, the coupons can be exchanged at the Broken Kettle for ice cream any day they are open. We apologize for the inconvenience.
