Knock, knock... who's there? Why, it's a pileated woodpecker!

We’ve been spotting plenty of these around the park lately, so we wanted to give you a proper introduction, or at least a few fun facts you can casually drop at your next gathering...

These are the largest woodpeckers in North America, about the size of a crow, with a bold red crest and sharp black-and-white stripes that make them stand out instantly.

Their thunderous drumming could put any upstairs neighbour to shame.

And get this: they hammer out about 15 beats per second. Thankfully, their skull works like a built‑in shock absorber, or they’d be racking up concussions faster than a heavyweight boxer.

Drumroll please... 🥁🥁🥁

Blue Lake is officially opening for the 2026 operating season! Our gates open at 2:00pm today.

Our staff are excited to welcome you back and have been working extremely hard to prepare for your arrival.

Daily gatehouse hours are 8:00am - 3:00pm, but they will be extended to 4:00pm just for today (May 22, 2026) for our first day of opening. If you're planning to arrive outside of these hours or want to get straight to your site, you can check-in and pay online before your visit.

Hikers should be aware that initial trail maintenance is ongoing and should prepare to encounter downed trees and mixed trail conditions (wet and muddy areas, lingering snow and ice).

Don't forget to check out our park store (inside the gatehouse) for some sweet treats, cool swag, and camping essentials.

We hope to see you soon!

Mother Nature is taking her time this year. A late snow thaw and lingering ground frost mean we need a little more time before Blue Lake is ready to welcome campers. Our team is working hard to ensure the campground is safe, accessible, and ready for visitors as soon as possible.

Blue Lake is scheduled to open on May 22, 2026.

If your reservation has been affected or if you were hoping to camp with us this weekend, we encourage you to explore nearby alternatives such as Sandbar Lake Provincial Park or Aaron Provincial Park. Reservations can be made here: https://reservations.ontarioparks.ca/

All affected campsite reservation holders will be contacted and offered a full refund or the opportunity to change their reservation without any penalty.

Thanks for sticking with us. We can’t wait to welcome you back to Blue Lake soon.
