We walk alongside individuals and families in the North Okanagan as they find safety, healing, and strength. We are committed to empowering our community to live in a society free from violence. Silence protects violence.

Recent events have sparked important conversations about sexual assault, consent, and the culture that surrounds gender-based violence.

Sexual violence can happen to anyone, and its impacts can be lasting. It can also be difficult to know where to turn, what support is available, or what to do next.
We all have a role in shaping a culture where consent, respect, and safety are the norm.

At Archway Society for Domestic Peace, we provide free and confidential support to survivors of sexual violence, including emotional support, counselling, advocacy, and help navigating available reporting and legal options. Support is available to all genders and sexualities.

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault or gender-based violence, you are not alone. You deserve to be heard. You deserve to be believed. You deserve support.

When you become a Holiday Hamper sponsor you are directly supporting women, children, and families who are survivors of domestic and sexual violence 🩵🎁

As a hamper sponsor you will shop for and drop off a gift basket or several packages for an individual or family. Sponsors receive a “wish list” of gift ideas and suggestions provided by the hamper recipient and then shop for the recipient within a set budget.

🫂 Having experienced difficult times throughout the year, both emotionally and/or financially, receiving gifts at this time of year can be incredibly meaningful. It’s not only about meeting a need—it’s about giving someone a reason to smile after what may have been a very difficult year.

Content note: Sexual violence

Recent reporting about sexual assault allegations at Cornell University has prompted difficult conversations far beyond the United States. For some in our community, this coverage may also bring forward personal experiences of violence.

At Archway Society for Domestic Peace, our message is clear: responsibility for sexual violence belongs to the person who commits it. Survivors deserve to be heard without judgment, treated with dignity and supported in making the choices that are right for them.

There is no one way to respond to sexual violence. People may resist, freeze, stay silent, leave, report or choose not to report. A person’s response does not mean they consented, and no survivor should have to prove their experience to deserve support.

Here in the North Okanagan, Archway provides free and confidential Sexual Assault Services for people of all genders and sexualities. Support can include counselling, emotional support, accompaniment to medical care, help navigating the justice system, and information about reporting and legal options.

You do not need to report to receive support. If you are considering reporting to the RCMP, we can talk with you about your options, including anonymous reporting, and support you through the process.

Whether your experience was recent or many years ago, or you are finding recent coverage difficult, you are welcome to reach out. You are the expert in your own experience, and we are here to support you.

Women & the Vote, 1910 - 1920

This was the decade that The National Council of Women went public in favor of suffrage. Between January and April 1916, women in Manitoba won the right to vote in provincial elections followed by women in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.

White women over the age of 21 who were Canadian citizens were granted the right to vote. It took another 40 years before all women in Canada were granted the same right.

📖 More Milestones: 1920 and Earlier

1853 - Mary Ann Shadd Cary was the first Black Woman to publish a newspaper. In 1853, she began publishing The Provincial Freeman, which gave a voice to Black Canadians and called for an end to slavery.

1860 - Nahnebahwequay (Catherine Sutton) traveled to England and successfully petitioned Queen Victoria to intervene in a land claim dispute near Owen Sound, Ontario. The Queen granted Catherine legal ownership. The Canadian government did not honour the Queen’s decision.

1876 - Dr. Emily Stowe, a noted women’s right activist, organized the country’s first suffrage organization.

1896 - Shaaw Tláa (Kate Carmack) was the first person in the world to discover a gold nugget, leading to the Klondike Gold Rush.

1914 - Charlotte Edith Anderson Monture was the first Indigenous woman to become a registered nurse in Canada.

1914 - Alice Jamieson became the first female judge in Canada and the British Empire when she was appointed to Calgary’s juvenile court.

1919 - Women became eligible to stand for office in the House of Commons.

🩵 Attended over 90 meetings with clients and professionals

Your support ensures our new furry teammate is healthy and ready to work. And when London’s needs are covered, extra funds will go to our Oak Child and Youth Advocacy Centre programs where she brings comfort, courage, and healing to children, youth, and families.

Through Oak CYAC London supports children and youth who have experienced abuse, sexual assault or witnessed a crime. Her gentle presence eases fear, builds trust, and helps young people feel safe enough to share their stories during forensic interviews, meetings, and counselling sessions.
