Please join us in congratulating Chief Douglas on receiving the prestigious Governor General’s Commendation for Bravery.
Chief Aubrey of Langford Fire Rescue recently presented the award in recognition of Chief Douglas’ courageous actions during a major incident on the Malahat on July 18, 2000. A tanker truck carrying propane rolled off the highway, creating an extremely dangerous situation as approximately 5,000 litres of fuel leaked and a large propane vapour cloud formed over the scene.
At the time, emergency officials described the incident as highly explosive. The Malahat was shut down, along with the nearby rail line, while hydro power to the area was cut to eliminate any potential ignition sources. The main transportation corridor between Victoria and Nanaimo remained closed for an extended period while crews worked to safely manage the emergency.
Chief Douglas’ leadership, professionalism, and bravery during this high risk incident reflect the very best of the fire service and the dedication shown by firefighters every day.
Congratulations, Chief Douglas, on this well deserved recognition.
