BC New Democrat Caucus

BC New Democrat Caucus David Eby and your BC NDP MLAs from across the province - working hard for you. In this beautiful place, too many people are struggling to make ends meet.

New Democrats, led by John Horgan, are working for opportunity and security for everyday families – a break for the middle class, education and good job prospects for young people, health care when you need it, and better care for seniors.

With the Look West jobs plan, British Columbians are punching well above our weight.

Last year our economy grew faster than the national average — with another $88 billion in proposed major projects. We're driving growth for Canada.

How are we building this momentum?

By bringing together communities, companies, and Indigenous people behind good projects that help everyone. And it's working.

The BC Conservative plan means conflict and projects stalled in court. That would kill BC's momentum.

Let's keep building a better future for everyone.

British Columbia's population growth has grown beyond our healthcare systems' capacity. Paired with the situation south of the border, U.S. healthcare workers are finding a home in our beautiful province, which supports science-based healthcare, rather than major politicization.

Since 2023, over 600,000 British Columbians have been connected to primary care, and that number will continue to grow. Right here at home in Langford, we have seen well over 10,000 people connected, a monumental achievement for our community.

Three years ago, we made prescription contraception free in B.C. - because people should be able to make decisions about their health based on what’s best for them, not on what they can afford.

The results are clear! 👇🏼

In just three years, more than 407,000 contraceptives have been dispensed across the province. More importantly, people are choosing the most effective options, like IUDs and implants, that were once out of reach because of how much they cost upfront.

UBC researchers found that 11,365 more British Columbians tried out long-acting reversible contraceptives than would have, had cost still been a barrier. And that 10% more people are using prescription contraceptives now that they’re free. 🤩

This is what it looks like when you actually remove barriers in a public healthcare system.

We’re also seeing more people using prescription contraception overall, and that’s preventing unintended pregnancies, improving health outcomes, and reducing pressure on the system down the line. 🏥

This is the kind of upstream investment that strengthens public healthcare: practical, evidence-based, and focused on people.

While others question whether this coverage should exist at all, we are focused on results, and delivering for people across B.C. 💪🏼

We've been laser-focused on increasing access to family medicine - and it's having an impact.

We've attached 600,000 British Columbians to a family doctor or nurse practitioner since 2023, thanks to:

🟢 A new payment model that recruits and retains more doctors
🟢 Actively recruiting US doctors and nurses fleeing Trump
🟢 Fast-tracking internationally trained health workers

Already, 500 US health care workers have taken up jobs in BC.

BC now leads Canada in the number of doctors per person, but there still aren't enough for everyone. So we're:

🧑‍⚕️ Increasing UBC med school to 328 seats
🩺 Adding dozens of nurse practitioner training seats across BC
🏥 Building BC's first new medical school in 76 years at SFU Surrey.

The new medical school opens in September and that next generation of doctors will start graduating in 2030.

We need to keep going - recruiting and training more doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers of all kinds.

🛑 But the BC Conservatives have said healthcare would "take the brunt" of their cuts. That would take us backwards and make it harder to get healthcare. That's a risk we can't afford.
