Good news! It’s time to pull that short story out of your drawer. You know the one. It’s the story you’ve already started, the one you keep thinking about, the one you wish you could finish. Inspired by Emily Carr’s writing, we’ll think about what’s burning inside you that wants to be written. We’ll ponder your core idea, learn more about your main character, step back to look at the flow, add vivid details, and reflect on the requirements for a great ending (even if it’s a quiet ending).

Three Sessions
August 28, 29, 30
10 am - 1 pm
$160/person

Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day! Today is a day for recognizing, honouring, and celebrating Indigenous Peoples and cultures across this land. This celebration is held annually on June 21st, the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year.

Carr House is located on the traditional lands of the Lekwungen speaking people, known today as the Songhees and Xʷsepsəm Nations. We are located at sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ (James Bay), and are honoured to work, play, and tell stories on this land.

The Carr House Community Society acknowledges that Carr House is a reminder and evidence of the devastating effects of settler colonialism on the landscape. As white settlers of British descent, the Carr family benefitted politically and monetarily from the dispossession and oppression of Indigenous communities by the Colonial Government. The artistic legacy of Emily Carr was heavily shaped by her experiences with Indigenous Peoples and cultures, and her artistic career benefitted greatly from the work of Indigenous artisans, whose creativity and cultural production she simultaneously admired and exploited.

Today, we celebrate the contributions and creativity of Indigenous Peoples past and present. Indigenous communities continue to thrive, flourish in the face of longstanding political and cultural repression.
