Victoria Brain Injury Society

Victoria Brain Injury Society We believe in a better future for brain injury survivors. The Victoria Brain Injury Society (VBIS) At VBIS, there are people who get it. You’re not alone.

Our mission is to support, educate, and advocate for brain injury survivors and their families. In doing so, we strive to increase community awareness about brain injuries and reduce the harmful stigma experienced by survivors. Acquired brain injury (ABI) results from damage to the brain that occurs after birth – and no two injuries are alike. To meet the diverse needs of our community, we offer i

ndividual support, peer support, family support, and various group programs. We assist people who’ve experienced concussions, strokes, aneurysms, and countless other types of ABI. We’re here to help you recover, adapt, and adjust; regain independence; and develop a secure sense of community. To learn more about VBIS and how you can support our mission, visit www.vbis.ca

Brain Fact Friday 🧠 After a brain injury, the brain can become more sensitive to stimulation.

Lights, noise, busy environments, or even conversations can feel overwhelming.

The good news? Tools and coping strategies can help make things feel more manageable over time.

At VBIS, we support individuals on their recovery journey by offering a space to learn, connect, and build practical strategies that work for you 💙

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Brain Fact Friday 🧠 Your brain is always changing—and that matters in recovery.

After a brain injury, it’s common to experience changes in mood, stress, and emotional regulation. That’s because the brain areas that support mental health can also be affected by injury.

But thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain has the ability to adapt, rewire, and heal over time.

Supporting your mental health—through connection, routine, and care—can play a powerful role in that process.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminding our community: healing isn’t linear, and you don’t have to go through it alone.

Looking for support? VBIS offers drop-in peer support groups where you can connect with others who understand—no referral needed.

Brain Fact Friday 🧠 Did you know: Brain injuries can be an often unseen outcome of domestic and interpersonal violence—impacting how a person thinks, feels, and heals.

🫎 The Moose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led movement that began along the Highway of Tears in BC, calling on all people to stand up against violence toward women and children. It is grounded in ceremony, culture, and a commitment to respect, safety, and healing.

At VBIS, we recognize that for some survivors, brain injury is part of their journey—and that healing must include compassion, connection, and culturally grounded support.

You can get involved:
🟤 Wear a moose hide pin as a personal commitment to end violence
🟤 Take part in Moose Hide Campaign Day
🟤 Learn, listen, and have conversations that support respect and change

Together, we can help create safer communities and support healing in all its forms.

Brain Fact Friday 🧠 Did you know: Up to 60% of people living with a brain injury experience mental health challenges like anxiety or depression during their recovery.

Healing from a brain injury isn’t just physical—it can also affect how you feel, think, and connect with others. 🫂

🌟That’s why mental health support is such an important part of recovery.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminded that support, understanding, and connection can make a meaningful difference—and to always remember to be kind to your mind. 🫶
