Royal BC Museum

Royal BC Museum Inspiring curiosity through shared stories, nature, history and culture. BC’s provincial museum. The museum was founded in 1886; the archives in 1894.

The Royal BC Museum Corporation is one of the foremost cultural institutions in the world. In 2003 these two organizations integrated to become British Columbia's combined provincial museum and archives, collecting artifacts, documents and specimens of BC's natural and human history, safeguarding them for the future, and sharing them with the world. Through research and education, we strive to bro

aden understanding about our province and inspire curiosity and wonder. We are passionate about sharing British Columbia's story with the millions of visitors who walk through our doors and explore our web site each year. Our archives, exhibits and galleries change and grow as our understanding grows, and we endeavour to share our knowledge in original and exciting ways. Each exhibit and gallery tells important stories about British Columbia and provides an engaging and thought-provoking window on the province's past, present and future. Our archives provide a treasure trove of information for researchers and genealogists through the stories that are preserved here.

Our thoughts are with the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, neigbouring Nations, and all who mourn on this five-year anniversary of the announcement of the discovery of the remains of over 200 children found on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. It is a grim reminder of this dark chapter of Canadian history. The Royal BC Museum honours all Indigenous nations and works in collaboration to find the truth about the Indian Residential School system and missing children. We will continue to walk this path together.

Since 2018, the federal government of Canada has recognized May as Canadian Jewish Heritage Month. For 250 years, Jewish Canadians have contributed to all facets of life in Canada, from politics, law and medicine, to arts, culture and sports.

Today, there are nearly 27,000 Jewish Canadians living in British Columbia and, as of the 2021 Canadian Census, more than 335,000 across Canada.

Take a look back through the BC Archives at just a few of the Jewish Canadians who’ve called BC home over the years and the places they’ve impacted.

Join us this evening for a reading from Carrianne Leung’s new novel, Wonderland Road. Set in a community trying to survive in a world of massive disruption and uncertainty, the novel follows three characters whose paths converge as they search for a future when the world hangs by a thread. Tender, urgent, and deeply human, it is a story about chosen family, resilience, and what we hold onto when everything falls apart.

Following the reading, Leung will take questions from the audience. Whether you’re a longtime admirer or discovering her work for the first time, this is an evening not to be missed.

International Museum Day is celebrated annually in recognition of the role museums play in cultural exchange, education and fostering global understanding of important issues.

This year’s theme is “Museums Uniting a Divided World”, emphasizing the unique potential for museums to act as bridges across geographical, cultural and even social divides.

Royal BC Museum history curator Dr. Elizabeth Peterson’s work with the Eastern Tigrai Archaeological Project (ETAP) saw heritage professionals from around the world come together with priests, elders and trauma-counselling specialists to lead community healing while documenting damage to religious heritage and developing sustainable plans for conservation following the war in Tigrai, Ethiopia, from 2020 to 2023.

"As a curator, archaeologist, and member of ETAP, I’ve seen firsthand how access to and support for cultural heritage can help us heal after periods of violence and strife. Sustaining, protecting, and reconnecting with one’s heritage is a vital part of recovery, supporting healing, restoring a sense of identity, and helping us to move forward with resilience and hope."

Dr. Elizabeth Peterson, History Curator, Royal BC Museum and ETAP member

Since first arriving in Canada in the late 1700s, the Asian community has made an indelible mark on British Columbia. From helping build the Canadian Pacific Railway, industry and military contributions, and poignant work in the arts, to running delicious restaurants and vital grocery stores in towns across the province, the impact of Asian migrants on daily life is felt each and every day in all corners of BC.

Each May, we recognize Asian Heritage Month and the ongoing contributions of Asian Canadians to life in Canada. Take a look back through the archives at what life was like for the Asian Canadians who helped create the BC we know today.
