Saturna Heritage Centre

Saturna Heritage Centre The Saturna Heritage Centre is a volunteer run operation in the old fog alarm building on East Point, Saturna Island, BC.

The old fog alarm building (FAB) from 1937 was saved and refurbished by the Saturna Island community. It has become a heritage centre complete with exhibits and a growing digital archive. The FAB and the greater lighthouse area on East Point has recently been deemed a heritage site. We rely on support from volunteers and donations to survive.

We are open 10am - 4pm today for the last day of our regular summer hours! We’d love to see you come by for a visit before the summer ends.

This weekend is your last opportunity to complete the East Point Quest this summer!

The FAB is open 10am - 4pm today and tomorrow, and we’re stocked with plenty of treasure maps for you to grab and explore East Point.

Pro tip: Bring your own clipboard to make filling out your quest answers a little easier.

Fun Fact Friday: Meet Tinker, One of East Point’s Lighthouse Dogs!

Life at the light station wasn't only about monitoring the weather and keeping the light and fog alarm operating. Families lived here, children grew up here, and pets were part of everyday life too.

From 1961–1966, the Fletcher family lived and worked at the East Point Light Station and they had a dog named Tinker.

Tinker is shown performing important ‘duties’, including:

- Guarding the lighthouse
- Checking oil barrel quality
- Watching for ships in distress

There are several photographs of Tinker at East Point, taken in 1962, and they are part of the Fletcher Collection in the Saturna Island Heritage Archive. Take a peek at the online archive to see more photos!

Our unique positioning at the FAB allows for some incredible whale watching opportunities right from the shore. Come by for a walk along the East Point Whale Trail and stop in at the FAB to learn about the whales of the Salish Sea and borrow a pair of binoculars.

We had a wonderful time at the FAB for last night’s Indigenous Film Festival. The community gathered in such a beautiful location, ṮEḴTEḴSEN East Point, to learn about Indigenous culture, storytelling, and personal reflection.

Thank you to everyone who helped put on this event including live music by ‘Key of Sea,’ snacks by Chef Marc, our host Haley Lewis, talkback panelist Tiffany Joseph, Parks Canada, CBC, and to everyone who came out to participate.

We had a FAB-ulous Open House this weekend! Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the beautiful day. We had so much fun playing live music in the sunshine, nibbling on FAB cookies and lemonade, chatting about everything Saturna Island, and watching the orcas swim by for a visit!
