Saturna Heritage Centre

Saturna Heritage Centre The Saturna Heritage Centre is a volunteer run operation in the old fog alarm building on East Point, Saturna Island, BC.

The old fog alarm building (FAB) from 1937 was saved and refurbished by the Saturna Island community. It has become a heritage centre complete with exhibits and a growing digital archive. The FAB and the greater lighthouse area on East Point has recently been deemed a heritage site. We rely on support from volunteers and donations to survive.

I want to thank everyone who came out to visit at the FAB – I truly appreciate all of the inquisitive visitors, supportive colleagues, and kind community members who contributed to making this a wonderful summer experience!

My time on Saturna has been filled with a variety of opportunities that have given me the chance to learn, connect with the community, and contribute to what the FAB has to offer. I look forward to continuing to visit in the future – wherever life takes me, Saturna Island will hold a place in my heart.

What a perfect way to wrap up the summer! Thank you to everyone who joined us for our End of Summer Open House on Sunday. It was a day full of FAB-ulous displays, homemade treats, and amazing live music by Saturna Island Fever, who brought the sunshine with their joyful tunes! To top it all off, we were treated to a magical orca sighting right off the shore!

Saturna Island: Garden, Forage, and Gather together over local food.

I'm excited to announce the completion of the Saturna Island Local Food Project!

This project involved creating a collection of interviews, poems, recipes, and photos centered around Saturna's unique food culture. I'm so grateful to everyone who contributed -- it was a joy to meet with you all and see you at work whether it was farming, gardening, foraging, or cooking for the Saturna community.

We have the finished booklet available to read at the FAB, very soon it will be available to borrow from the Saturna Island Community Library, and we plan to add a digital copy to our website.

Thank you!

Thank you to Parks Canada and Wapikoni Mobile for organizing the sharing of these beautiful films, to Sheila McQueen & David Hoitink for the live music, and Marc for the delicious hot soup.

Fun Fact Friday:

We love watching the oystercatchers! Did you know the black oystercatcher's range never strays far from shore? They occur all along the coast of North America from the Aleutian Islands to the Baja Peninsula.

Fun Fact Friday:

In 1938 the Fog Alarm Building was equipped with a diaphone to produce a blast followed by a grunt of sound by forcing compressed air through unique pipes, pistons and a resonator. The diaphone was later replaced with a simulated electric diaphone when electricity was made available at the light station.

Turn on your sound to hear what the fog horn would have sounded like!
