Indigenous Language Revitalization Program

Indigenous Language Revitalization Program The University of Victoria's Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalization is delivered in communities and also online

The award-winning and accessible Certificate in Aboriginal Language Revitalization is offered by the University of Victoria's Department of Linguistics and the Division of Continuing Studies in partnership with the En'owkin Centre. Summer Institute core coursework, combined with flexible elective offerings, enables individuals concerned with language loss, maintenance, and recovery to develop both

knowledge and practical strategies for language revitalization activities across British Columbia and beyond. Program participants include individuals working with First Nations and other indigenous communities in the revitalization and teaching of Aboriginal languages, or with agencies involved in the development and delivery of language and cultural revitalization policies and programs. Participants come from across British Columbia and as far away as Nunavut, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories, and learn from one another as well as from experienced instructors and resource people. We acknowledge with thanks the support of the First People's Heritage, Language and Culture Council and the Aboriginal Special Projects Fund of the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education for their support in the development of the certificate program in Aboriginal Language Revitalization.

Amazing!!! We are so inspired by what students continue on to accomplish! Congratulations on your podcast Anishinaabemowin Word Parts- we love it! :)

Our current episode shows us how finals from different verb types are related. The final (or ending) of the verb changes what type of verb it is, which the actions are the same.

A wonderful person who has touched so many hearts. LEXIXELEK, Dr. Baptiste Harry “Skip” Dick of the Songhees Nation will be greatly missed.

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of LEXIXELEK, Dr. Baptiste Harry “Skip” Dick of the Songhees Nation—a beloved and deeply respected Elder whose presence has been woven into the fabric of the University of Victoria for decades.

Dr. Skip was more than a respected Elder, he was a guiding light, a teacher, a Knowledge Keeper and an advocate for Indigenous education, culture and community. His life’s work has left an everlasting mark on this university, Camosun College, the Victoria Native Friendship Centre and across communities throughout these territories and beyond.

We are so sad to learn of the passing of Bonnie Jane Maracle. We are so grateful for her commitment and dedication to the CILR program and our students over the past 20 years. Her contributions to both our in-community and online deliveries were amazing. The students loved her, we loved her. We so appreciated her thoughts and ideas that helped to shape the evolution of our curriculum and program over time. It was a joy to spend time with her during grad week last June and we are grateful she made the trip! We will miss her and send warm thoughts and prayers to her family and friends at this time. ❤️

Dear Friends and Community Members,

It is with profound sadness that the Ontario Native Literacy Coalition and Turtle’s Back Publishing share the passing of our dear Board Member and Chief Governance Officer, Bonnie Jane Maracle, on February 12, 2026.

Bonnie was an inspiring leader, educator, and advocate whose unwavering dedication to Indigenous learning and education touched countless lives across our communities. Through her commitment, wisdom, and generous spirit, she strengthened our collective work and helped shape the future of Indigenous literacy and empowerment in Ontario and beyond.

We will remember Bonnie for her kindness, integrity, and tireless pursuit of knowledge and truth. Her vision and voice enriched every conversation, and her legacy will continue to guide the work we do in service of our learners, educators, and communities.

On behalf of our staff, board members, and partners, we extend our deepest condolences to Bonnie’s family, friends, and all who had the honour of knowing her. We are profoundly grateful for her years of service and the light she brought to our shared journey.

Bonnie will be dearly missed, but her spirit and teachings will remain with us always.

With heartfelt sympathy,
ONLC and TBP Staff
