Pride Month is a reminder that everyone deserves to feel welcome, connected, and part of the community. As a neighbourhood house, creating spaces where people feel they belong is something we strive for every day.

Summer has officially arrived! ☀️

At the Community Closet, we have an enormous selection of sandals, flip-flops, party shoes, and other summer footwear from great brands at very affordable prices. Be sure to check out our giant basket of $2 shoes.

We're also stocked with lovely bucket hats. As you can see in the photo, Gabriela is proudly showing off one of the many treasures waiting to be discovered at the Community Closet.

We've recently received a beautiful collection of summer clothing, including some high-end pieces by designers such as Stella McCartney — all at thrift-store prices. But that's a story for another day...

Visit us at 435 Simcoe Street (inside the shopping plaza), browse, chat with our friendly staff and volunteers, and discover a few treasures along the way.

Every purchase makes a difference: all proceeds from the Community Closet help support JBCP's community-based programs.

🕚 Open Tuesday–Sunday, 11 am–4 pm

Good organizations don't happen by accident. They are built by people who care enough to show up, ask thoughtful questions, and help chart a path forward.

Today, several members of the JBCP Board gathered for a planning session focused on the future of our organization and the community we serve.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication, wisdom, and generosity of our volunteer board members. Their commitment behind the scenes helps strengthen JBCP and ensures we can continue supporting connection, belonging, and wellbeing throughout James Bay.

From May 31 to June 6, Canada celebrates National AccessAbility Week, recognizing the achievements of persons with disabilities and the importance of building communities where everyone can participate, contribute, and belong.

For us at JBCP, accessibility means more than ramps or elevators. It means being open and responsive when community members tell us what they need — and working together to create spaces where those needs can be met.

Many of the programs we offer today began when someone shared an idea or reached out for support. Our Low Vision Group is one example. It grew from community members who identified a need 26 years ago and were willing to help address it. Julie, the group's founder, is still a regular participant today.

And according to Darrel, our volunteer, the photo below may be the very first group photo in the program's history!

We're grateful to be part of a community that continues to show us new ways to build accessibility, together.

Meet Jamie!

Or perhaps you’ve already met Jamie while visiting our building — for one of our community programs, LifeLabs, UPCC, HerWay Home, or simply while passing through our lobby.

Jamie is our resident mannequin and, without question, one of the best-dressed residents of James Bay. Every outfit comes straight from the Community Closet — our second-to-none clothing thrift store.

And honestly? Jamie turns heads. Every single day, dozens of people stop to admire the outfits and ask where they can get them. The answer is simple: you can shop the looks right on the spot — and discover even more treasures at the store itself.

Visit the Community Closet Tuesday–Sunday, 11 am–4 pm, inside the shopping plaza at 435 Simcoe St. Expect boutique-level service, unique and stylish finds at wonderfully affordable prices, and the comfort of knowing that every purchase directly supports JBCP’s free community-based programs.

And yes… if you were wondering: Jamie is named after James Bay, the community we’ve proudly called home for more than 50 years. Jamie has become such a local celebrity that there were even a couple of attempted kidnappings over the years.

Now the real question is: what will Jamie wear next time?

This spring has been full of life! Thanks to the generous support of our neighbour and friend Diane Townsend of Beckley Cottage Preschool on Parry St, we got to experience the magic of watching baby chicks hatch in the Family Centre. Adults and children alike had the chance to hold and gently touch the chicks before they returned to Diane’s backyard chicken coop after spending a week or so with us. Pure joy and excitement!

It is also our second year of watching frog eggs grow into tadpoles and then frogs, thanks to one of our families, who brought them to us from her parents’ pond on Salt Spring Island. We watched them hatch, steadily grow, and become more active in the aquarium. Some children are so interested that they run into the Family Centre to check on the tadpoles as soon as they arrive to play. The frogs will be returned to the same pond on Salt Spring Island once they have fully grown.

And finally, we also watched the process of caterpillars slowly transforming into butterflies. They arrived as tiny caterpillars, ate and ate until they formed a chrysalis, and then emerged as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies after 7–10 days. They were released into the garden one sunny afternoon!

“Shelley somehow always knows what to pull off the rack!”

We hear versions of this all the time from people visiting our Community Closet.

Whether someone is looking for an outfit for a job interview, a special event, or simply wanting to feel a little more confident in themselves again, our store manager Shelley has a remarkable eye for helping people feel seen, comfortable, and cared for.

More than once, someone has walked in convinced they wouldn’t find anything that suited their shape, size, or taste… only to leave smiling, surprised, and carrying an outfit they love (actually, it's rarely just ONE outfit!)

And every dollar spent at the shop goes directly back into supporting community-based programs at JBCP.
If you haven’t visited the Community Closet yet, come by and say hello.
