After expressing an interest in finding more opportunities to gain experience and build skills for his resume, Alex joined the volunteer placement at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre soup lunch, serving desserts, helping with clean up, and building relationships with other volunteers.

Through this experience, he has focused on developing his time management skills, interpersonal skills, and cultural awareness, teamwork, as well as improving his personal care!

Today, on World Cerebral Palsy Day, let’s remember that inclusion isn’t about simply making space for people, it’s about making sure everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute, and belong.

Accessibility is a fundamental part of inclusion, and small changes can make a meaningful difference. When we create environments where everyone can participate, everyone benefits.

Today is a reminder to keep challenging barriers, listening to lived experiences, and building a world where accessibility and inclusion are part of how we do things, not an afterthought.

Learning about native plants and photography at the same time? Check ✅️

The latest Out & About adventurers went to a park to practice their practical photography skills, working on subject separation, learning techniques to help their subjects stand out in photos. As the group walked through the park, capturing the flowers and natural surroundings, they learnt about the native plants on the other side of their lens!

Tomorrow on September 30th, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, it’s important to take time to honour residential school survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and reflect on the ongoing journey toward truth and reconciliation.
Members of our community will be taking part in events throughout the region, listening, learning, and reflecting. We encourage you to do the same, and we hope to see you there.

Events that may be near you:

- The South Island Powwow at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, 10am – 7pm

- Walking Together in Truth at Phillips Road and Sooke Road, 12pm – 4pm

- As waters merge–swaying waves beckoning us closer, an exhibit at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, free admission from 12pm - 5pm

- Truth and Reconciliation: A Gathering of Remembrance and Care, hosted by the Support Network for Indigenous Women and Women of Colour, 5pm - 8pm

- The Art of Reconciliation: Survivor’s Panel at the Sooke Region Museum, 10am – 12pm
