The B.C. NDP pushed through Bill 9 on the last day of session, using the speaker to break a tie vote. Now their amendments to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA) are now law.

BC Green MLA Rob Botterell led the team that wrote the original FOI Act, back when he was a public servant in the 1990s. His reaction to the bill’s passing? “My heart is broken.”

As grocery prices rise and supply chains are disrupted, billionaires are buying up BC farmland — further jeopardizing BC’s food supply.

We saw what happened when speculators treated housing as a commodity; now BC’s farmland is getting more expensive (and less productive) as billionaires hoard land for profit. Local farmers are begging the government to take action. MLA Valeriote took those concerns to the Minister of Agriculture in Question Period today.

BC Greens statement on the five-year anniversary of the discovery at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School

VICTORIA, B.C. – Five years ago, British Columbians learned of news that can only be described as horrific: the discovery of unmarked and undocumented burials at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

This day is a reminder of the tragedy of residential schools—a tragedy that was led by the Crown. It’s clear this is a reality that some in this country have still yet to fully grasp, but that so many First Nations still feel to this day. For many survivors, it is a trauma that spans generations.

About 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend residential schools. These schools were funded by the Canadian government and operated by churches. At residential schools, horrific abuse took place in an attempt to commit what the Truth and Reconciliation Committee has called a “cultural genocide.”

The news out of Kamloops five years ago shocked not only Canada to its core, but the world. The country is only now beginning to reckon with the Crown’s treatment of Indigenous Peoples. For survivors of residential schools, the BC Greens are here to listen and hold the Crown accountable for its past, present, and future.

This day should be a reminder to reflect on the atrocities and recognize how much more work we all have ahead of us to address the impacts.

Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals face a severe, systemic crisis of violence, accounting for approximately 16% of female homicides despite making up less than 5% of the population; many First Nations across the country don’t have access to clean drinking water; and, housing, addiction services, telecommunications, and health care in First Nations communities still remain chronically underfunded.

Indigenous Peoples, in spite of these tragedies, have exemplified the utmost strength, courage, and resilience.

As drought conditions worsen across the province, the BC NDP are telling British Columbians to conserve water, while selling water off to corporations. The BC Green Caucus is calling on the Province to be more transparent with how it’s safeguarding water as it risks selling off its most precious resource.

Last week, the BC Greens called for a moratorium on AI data centres until environmental, energy, health, and data sovereignty risks are properly understood and regulated. The government is not being transparent with how it is safeguarding its water against corporate interests. On eastern Vancouver Island, watersheds supplying most of the Island’s population and agricultural production are privately owned and managed. The Private Managed Forest Land Act that these watersheds fall under, has far weaker protections than those applied on Crown land under the Forest and Range Practices Act.

The BC Greens are calling on the BC government to:

- Suspend all non-essential industrial water uses, including fracking, bottling, and AI data usage, during droughts
- Create a provincial framework to limit the use of fresh water in fracking and AI operations
- Modernize industrial water rates—currently among the lowest in Canada—so British Columbians benefit from large-scale corporate water use
- Create and fund watershed boards so First Nations, farmers, industry, and local residents actually have a say in water operations
- Return responsibility for oil and gas water licensing and approvals to the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, rather than the BC Energy Regulator

Disability Assistance rates in British Columbia are still $1000/month below the poverty line, and haven't been raised across the board in 5 years, despite rampant inflation.

People are skipping meals to pay their rent. It’s time to raise the rates.
