The SS Beaver was the first steamship to operate in the Pacific Northwest. This vessel made remote parts of Canada accessible for fur trading. This photo shows her in the later part of her life, when her inebriated crew ran her aground on rocks in Burrard Inlet at Prospect Point in Stanley Park, Vancouver. This wreak occurred on July 25th 1888, but wasn't fully sunk until July 1892 when a passing steamer Yosemite's wash finally sunk her.

On July 26th 1888, the iconic SS Beaver was ground to a halt as it hit the rocky terrain of Prospect Point in Stanley Park. It is hard to say how the SS Beaver met it's untimely end because of the multiple conflicting accounts of the incident. Heavy fog, strong tides, and a spirit-being were all rumored to be factors that contributed to the SS Beaver wreck.

However, later reports claimed that the captain and crew were intoxicated at the time of the incident. This impaired judgement could have also played a large role in this maritime mishap. Luckily, all of the crew managed to get safely ashore and the only casualty was the ship itself. The SS Beaver remained perched and rotting where it crashed for another 4 years.
